Quantum technology is a multi-disciplinary field that crosses the traditional boundaries between nanophysics, computer science, and electrical engineering.

Quantum Technology is one of the majors in the Aalto University Bachelor's Programme in Science and Technology and is taught entirely in English.
Content of the studies
The compulsory courses introduce students to quantum science and technology, fundamental physics such as the quantum theory and electromagnetism, programming, the necessary analytical and numerical tools from mathematics, as well as key quantum technology know-how such as quantum electric circuits and quantum information processing. The elective courses cover advanced topics in nanotechnology, quantum mechanics, photonics, materials, and quantum technology.

Quantum technology is a rapidly developing field of engineering, both in Finland and abroad. As such, there is an urgent need for experts that can develop quantum solutions to technological challenges in computation, communication, sensing, and simulation. The Quantum Technology Bachelor’s degree gives you the necessary skills to become a future leader in quantum engineering.
The Quantum Technology major includes the following topics:

Structure of the studies
The bachelor's degree (180 ECTS) is composed of basic studies of the programme (65 ECTS mathematics, programming, industrial engineering and management, obligatory languages, Aalto studies, orientation), the major in quantum technology (65 ECTS including BSc thesis and seminar), the minor (20-25 ECTS) and elective studies (25-30 ECTS).
More about the language of instruction
The language of instruction in the Aalto Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Technology and the Quantum Technology major is English. The programme is conducted entirely in English, meaning that all courses and exams are in English. For students with sufficient proficiency in Finnish, it is also possible to study the 20-25 credit minor subject of the bachelor’s degree in Finnish.
Studies at the master’s level can also be completed entirely in English.
With a Quantum Technology Bachelor’s degree, you will have long-standing career prospects in areas that require strong expertise in quantum science and analytical skills. After the completion of a master degree, quantum technology students can find employment in a wide range of industries and research institutions. Quantum technology experts can work as research engineers in high-tech companies focusing on computation, communication, or sensing technologies based on quantum physics. By completing the Aalto Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Technology, you will earn a Bachelor of Science (Technology) degree (180 ECTS), or tekniikan kandidaatti in Finnish. The degree is designed to be completed in three years.
After graduating from the BSc Programme the student automatically has the right to continue studies in selected master's programmes. By completing the Master's programme in the field of Technology at Aalto University, you will earn a Master of Science (Technology) degree (120 ECTS), or diplomi-insinööri in Finnish.
Further study options
As a student of the Quantum Technology major, you are entitled to continue your studies at the master’s level at Aalto University. The major gives you a solid basis for further studies in the Aalto University master’s programmes, for example, the MSc in Engineering Physics, where a dedicated Quantum Technology track exists. Other degree options at Aalto include electrical engineering, computer science, and mathematics and algorithms.
Non-EU/EEA students selected to the Quantum Technology major will be charged a tuition fee of €12000 per academic year. They are eligible to apply for scholarships awarded by the Aalto University Scholarship programme.
The study environment in Aalto University is strongly international and studies are conducted in multicultural groups.
Aalto University also offers diverse possibilities for developing one’s global competence by e.g., completing part of the degree abroad in an international partner university (exchange studies), conducting practical training abroad, taking a summer course abroad or acting as a tutor for first-year students.
Cooperation with other parties
The Quantum Technology major is a joint effort between Aalto School of Science (SCI) and the Aalto School of Electrical Engineering (ELEC). As such, the degree programme has access to a large pool of dedicated teachers from different fields of engineering, including mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, and quantum science and technology. The research in quantum technology is international and includes both national and international collaborators, for example, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, CSC-IT Center for Science, the European Union, as well as many foreign research institutions and companies. Aalto University collaborates closely with the other technical universities in the Nordic region, and the university has an extended network of partner organizations in Europe and overseas. Frequent exchange of staff and students between these environments forms a cornerstone of quantum technology research and education.
The Quantum Technology major contributes to the development of quantum technologies in Finland, and it has strong ties to international activities across the world. This enables the programme to integrate visiting professors in the training of quantum technology students and to develop collaborative learning and research projects with companies and research institutions.
The research in quantum technology at Aalto University is strong in several selected areas. These include low-temperature quantum phenomena, superconducting circuits, topological materials, ultracold gasses, quantum computing and communication, quantum sensing, quantum information processing, integrated photonic technologies, laser physics, and solid-state quantum physics.
