Program Description

Bachelor of Science in Graphic Communications

With an eye to the future, Chowan is creating a setting where creativity and innovation will merge to produce a student that is aesthetical, theoretically, and technologically trained in graphic design, interactive design, print technology, packaging design, and/or studio art. By combining its technological resources and faculty expertise, the university will renew its efforts to develop students’ creative ideas, artistic ability, self-expression, and professional skills as they study video, digital design, print design, drawing, digital imaging, packaging, web design, photography, painting, ceramics, mixed media, etc., at the intersection of art and technology. Whether using “centuries-old methods or by pushing the boundaries of digital creativity,” the department will produce unique and confident graduates with the skills that contemporary print technology, design, and the arts demand.

The William A. Krueger School of Graphic Communications at Chowan University is a 40,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility that offers curriculum in both print and digital media from graphic design to finishing. Our award-winning faculty and students have established the Krueger School as a perennial awarding-winning leader in the printing and packaging industry. The School of Graphic Communications offers students a well-rounded and comprehensive educational experience in the graphic communications, packaging, and imaging industries.

The facilities in Green Hall include a fully equipped Mac Lab for art students featuring Adobe Creative Suite software, spacious classrooms for 2D studio work, like drawing, painting and printmaking studios with equipment for those disciplines, ceramics studio with throwing wheels, a kiln, and other workspaces, two art galleries which feature exhibitions by students and professional artists and a wood shop to create frames for artwork for Studio Art students concentrating in painting, ceramics, or printmaking, and the pre-art therapy track. Art-related fields such as graphic design or graduate studies can be pursued by graduates. The department supports the campus community by contributing to cultural awareness through providing exposure to visual art.

As a Communication Arts major, you can connect your classroom knowledge with real-world experience. Our internships provide students with opportunities to gain practical experience in professional settings. The Chowan University VISION Club and Artisus Club offer students additional educational, service, and fellowship opportunities.
