Introduction
The Department of Teacher Education offers two Bachelor of Science degrees: Elementary Education,
and Secondary Science. Upon graduation will be licensed in, Elementary Education 1-8, and
Secondary Science 5-12.
The academic programs are academically rigorous in order to prepare outstanding candidates for the teaching profession. Integral to this academic excellence is an understanding of Native culture, which is woven throughout the curriculum. It is expected that the values and principles of Native culture will be embraced and modeled through dispositions reflective of culturally responsive teaching. All three programs are designed around a cohort model learning, highlighting the importance of collaboration and teamwork as necessary preludes to being change agents dedicated to culturally responsive teaching.
During the first semester of coursework, teacher education students are required to take the Praxis I exam. Students must pass the Praxis I exam by the end of the 2nd semester in order to stay in the program.
