Program Description

The credit requirements of this programme are indicative only. They are subject to review. Students admitted to the Scheme will complete a common Year 1 curriculum. They will select any one of the Honours degree awards and start to study the corresponding content as early as in semester one of Year 2, or as late as in semester two of Year 2.

Programme Aims

The BSc(Hons) Scheme in Computing comprises the following awards. It aims to give students the flexibility to decide on the final award in their first year of study.

  • The BSc(Hons) in Computing aims to equip graduates with solid computing foundations in areas such as programming, computational thinking and data structure so they can develop professional computer systems and software. Students gain strong problem-solving abilities and become highly competent in software development for virtually all sectors.
  • The BSc(Hons) in Enterprise Information Systems aims to provide graduates with a good balance of business and technical backgrounds. Graduates are equipped with strong competence in investigating business systems, identifying options for improving those systems and bridging the needs of the business with the use of IT. They also gain abilities to develop information systems and manage business projects in the commercial sector.
  • The BSc(Hons) in Financial Technology and Artificial Intelligence aims to cultivate financial technologists who can develop intelligent software applications and innovative finance solutions, by equipping them with good fundamental computing knowledge. The focus is on AI, sound finance concepts and strong intellectual and practical skills, enabling them to apply computing technologies in finance and related areas. They are expected to be adaptive to the rapid changes in technological, economic and social environments.

Characteristics

BSc(Hons) Scheme in Computing

  • Common first year: students admitted to the Scheme do not need to decide on the final award in the first year of study, and only need to select their study paths in the second year.
  • Rich study pathways: the core credits of the programme is on the low side, providing a lot of room for students to take a Minor study in their own interesting disciplines, such as Business Administration, Financial Services, Social Science, or other Engineering disciplines. They can also take additional subjects in Computing to strengthen and specialize in one or more technical streams.
  • Applied and practical: the curriculum covers up-to-date practical skills, both in content and teaching methodology, e.g. iPhone technology.
  • Master's degree: the Department provides articulation to students for admission into the Master's programme that it offers. They can receive a Master's degree with one extra year of study.
  • Recognition and Scholarship: many scholarships are available for students, recognizing their academic and non-academic performance.

 Computing - BSc(Hons):

  • Features a rich set of Electives that cover real-life applications, such as Data Mining, Multimedia & Game Programming, E-Commerce, Financial and Social Computing.
  • Minor option: students can apply to pursue a Minor study in any discipline.
  • Students with backgrounds in Arts, Science or Business can apply.

Enterprise Information Systems - BSc(Hons):

  • A balanced curriculum that covers technology, management and business, with a strong emphasis on computing techniques and applications, and software design and development skills in the business sector, such as logistics, customer relationship, audit and control.
  • Minor option: students can apply to pursue a Minor study in any discipline.
  • Students with backgrounds in Arts, Science or Business can apply.

Financial Technology and Artificial Intelligence - BSc(Hons):

  • An interdisciplinary curriculum that covers software engineering, systems security, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptocurrency, crowdfunding and e-finance, big data and others.
  • Minor option: students can apply to pursue a Minor study in any discipline.
  • Students with backgrounds in Arts, Science or Business can apply.

Curriculum

All students are admitted to the BSc(Hons) Scheme in Computing. In the first year, they take a common set of subjects to lay a foundation for university study and gain a taste of the Scheme. In the second year, they can select individual awards and study the corresponding content. All these awards feature the minor option and an individual or a group integrative capstone project in the final year.

Computing - BSc(Hons)

  • Year One: fundamental knowledge, laying the foundation for university study, a taste of the Scheme.
  • Year Two: generic broadening computing skills, and basic business and management concepts.
  • Year Three: strengthening computing technologies and applications in IT.
  • Final Year: specialization in different areas such as data mining, computer graphics, e-commerce, Internet computing, multimedia computing and game programming.

Enterprise Information Systems - BSc(Hons)

  • Year One: fundamental knowledge, laying the foundation for university study and gaining a taste of the Scheme.
  • Year Two: basic computing and IT concepts, underlying technologies, business, accounting and management concepts.
  • Year Three: a broadening year featuring various aspects of computing skills and knowledge of enterprise information systems.
  • Final Year: specialization in areas such as information system management, audit & control, decision support, knowledge & project management, business process management, logistics and workflow.

Financial Technology and Artificial Intelligence - BSc(Hons)

  • Year One: fundamental knowledge, laying the foundation for university study and gaining a taste of the Scheme.
  • Year Two: broadening computing skills, basic economics, accounting and finance concepts.
  • Year Three: a strengthening year with core subjects like software engineering, systems security as well as computing/finance electives.
  • Final Year: specialization in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning & pattern recognition, crowdfunding & e-finance, e-payment & cryptocurrency.

Professional Recognition

The programmes (except BSc(Hons) in Financial Technology and Artificial Intelligence^) have been granted accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

Graduates of all programmes can become members of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Those with appropriate work experience can become professional members of the ACM Hong Kong Chapter (HK Chapter) and enjoy the right to vote for the LEGCO IT functional constituency representative. Graduates can also join the IEEE Computer Society Hong Kong Chapter (CS Hong Kong Chapter) and be entitled to vote for the IT functional constituency representative.

^The Department will seek accreditation from the HKIE for BSc(Hons) in Financial Technology and Artificial Intelligence.

Career Prospects

BSc(Hons) in Computing graduates can become programmers, system developers and software engineers, sales engineers or webmasters. Our graduates find employment opportunities in sectors such as the government, software houses, e-commerce, banking, finance, public facilities and freight forwarding.

BSc(Hons) in Enterprise Information Systems graduates can take up such technical positions as programmers, system analysts, system developers, software engineers and system administrators, and less technical positions including technical sales and sales engineers, project managers, web administrators and web services designers.

BSc(Hons) in Financial Technology and Artificial Intelligence graduates are expected to become financial technologists who can fill the talent gap of the fast growing FinTech field. Career opportunities in FinTech are enormous in Hong Kong and worldwide such as financial consultants, AI consultants, financial data analysts, FinTech system developers and entrepreneurs.

Entrance Requirements

PolyU welcomes applications from qualified candidates from around the world. The following guidelines are for the reference of students who wish to seek admission to PolyU based on non-local qualifications. Qualifications that cannot be found below will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

GCE A-level / International A-level

GCE Advanced Level or International Advanced Level with passes in 3 AL, OR 2 AL and 2 AS, subjects 

(This is only the minimum eligibility criteria. Applicants who gain admission, typically, attain at least BBB in 3 AL subjects.)

International Baccalaureate (IB)

A minimum score of 24 with at least grade 4 in 2 Higher Level subjects

(This is only the minimum eligibility criteria. Applicants who gain admission, typically, attain a score of 30 or above, including bonus points.)

SAT Reasoning Test/ACT/Advanced Placement Test/SAT Subject Tests

A High School (Graduation) Diploma (non-Chinese curriculum) and any one of the following:

  • a total score of 1190 in the SAT Reasoning Test; or
  • an American College Test (ACT) composite score of 24;

and

  • grade 3 in two Advanced Placement (AP) subjects; or
  • a score of 600 in two SAT Subject Tests

[English language requirement is waived for those attaining a score of 590 or above in the Evidence-based Reading and Writing in the SAT]

Applicants with good results in the GCE A-level / International A-level or International Baccalaureate (IB) can be granted up to 25% credit transfer upon admission to the 4-year degree curriculum.
