Introduction
The Music program is an integral part of the educational and cultural environment of Moravian University and the Lehigh Valley. We offer top-notch, comprehensive, and personalized degree programs in music integrated with liberal arts studies, so you'll never have to face the "what can you do with a degree in music?" question without an answer. Many of our ensembles, concerts, lectures, and more are open to faculty, staff, members of the community, and students from any major.
Program Highlights
All-Steinway School
Thanks to a gift from the late Betty Louise Aierstock Moore '45, Moravian University has achieved the "All-Steinway School" designation.
Ensembles
You won't be short of performance opportunities here. With over a dozen ensembles that span nearly all genres and time periods and include faculty, staff, and students of all majors, you'll leave with an enviable repertoire list and first-hand knowledge of how music can bring a community together.
Research
Students in the music program are encouraged to take part in individualized experiences to help them develop as performers. Opportunities include the Honors Program, Student Opportunities for Academic Research (SOAR), and independent study courses.
Study Abroad
Sophomore year is the perfect time for a study abroad opportunity, or, as we like to call it, a “Global Greyhound Trip.” The Elevate experience includes a faculty-led trip to one of our featured destinations—the Czech Republic or Costa Rica—at no extra cost to students!

Scholarships and Funding
Scholarships up to USD 25,000 for International Students
Moravian University offers an International Student Merit Award based primarily on academic achievement: grades, the strength of your academic program, your TOEFL or IELTS scores, and your SAT scores if submitted.
Curriculum
The university currently offers two degrees for music majors: the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Music. The Bachelor of Arts allows more general studies than the Bachelor of Music and is the preferred degree for students wishing to double major, while the Bachelor of Music degree is for students who wish for more comprehensive musical studies. This is the required degree for students wishing to earn Pennsylvania Department of Education teaching certification. The Music Department offers the following concentrations within the Bachelor of Music degree: music education, performance (instrumental, vocal, jazz), sacred music, and composition.
Program Outcome
Our curriculum and department strive to affirm the development of the whole student intellectually, physically, emotionally, and ethically. This goal is learning-centered rather than teaching-centered. Thus, each student will:
- Demonstrate competency with fundamental musicianship skills including solfège; rhythmic performance; rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic dictation; conducting patterns; and basic keyboard skills
- Demonstrate proficiency in Western music theory, including standard principles of voice leading and part writing in diatonic and chromatic harmony and contemporary idioms
- Demonstrate an understanding of the major historical styles, epochs, and composers of Western music, from antiquity to the present
- Demonstrate growth as performers in both solo and ensemble situations
- Demonstrate an ability to improvise using a given set of parameters
- Demonstrate an understanding of the music from outside traditional Western studies and styles, and draw connections to Western music
- Demonstrate familiarity with music-related technology, including music software and digital storytelling, and other technologies as appropriate to the degree program
- Demonstrate an ability to write and speak intelligently about music
- Demonstrate an ability to synthesize various aspects of music study (theory, history, musicianship, performance) in both academic and performance venues, thereby demonstrating critical thinking and maturing into well-rounded performing musicians
- Develop the capacity to evolve into self-sufficient and life-long learners in musical studies
