Program Description

Bachelor of Games Programming

SAE Institute UK

With over 2,100 games companies in the UK alone, there is a real demand in the industry for talented, technically able graduates who can turn their creative visions into game realities. Put your creative and technical talents to work and be a game-changer in the industry!

Overview

You’ll learn 2 programming languages (C++ and C#) and then go on to develop your technical expertise in programming, problem solving skills within the context of applying game design theory and mechanics, as well as learning two of the most used Game Engines: Unity and Unreal.

In addition, this course also covers how to develop multiplayer games and mobile app games, graphics programming with OpenGL, shader programming and how to create VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) games.

High quality games bring together both the technical and creative aspects of games programming and you’ll have plenty of hands-on experience. Through the deconstruction of existing games and Artificial Intelligence principles, you’ll become better placed to understand the markets of the future and how best to impact them.

Your future in games:

With over 32.4m gamers in the UK and with the value of the UK consumer games market reaching a record of £4.33bn last year, there is a clear need for talented games programmers.

Games programming graduates from SAE have gone on to work for blue chip organisations such as Microsoft and Bloomberg and have worked on titles including Pokémon Art Academy, Lego Lord of the Rings and GastroGnome.

Modules

Foundation of Game Design and Game Production

We will introduce you to fundamental concepts covering game design theory, game level design practices and common techniques used in game production. You will hone the critical analysis skills needed to deconstruct existing games so that you can get hands-on experience recreating and modifying them. We ensure from the start that you are using industry vocabulary to describe the processes of game production techniques and through the study of industry related articles you will become accustomed to the work flows used in modern developmental pipelines.

Network Programming and Tool Development

In addition to the network fundamentals, we will examine operations for multiplayer games while encouraging you to develop tools which will aid the overall game development process. For example, you will learn how to expand and extend the Game Engine editor and develop plugins. Ultimately this facilitates a more efficient work flow, bringing you up to speed with industry standards.

Graphics and Shader Programming for Games

The effective and efficient use of graphical elements is one of the key features that affects the gaming experience. You will study the technical and creative aspects of graphics programming such as OpenGL, and learn how to develop and code custom shaders. From understanding the different type of shaders (e.g. Vertex shaders), to taking into consideration the lighting setup, reflections, refractions, you will learn how to easily create your own shader.

Cost & Fees

SAE Institute is a private higher education provider. Funding towards tuition fees is available to UK/EU students but does not cover the whole course fee.

Fees

Tuition Fees vary according to campus and whether you are a UK/EU student or an international student.

Tuition Fees vary according to campus and whether you are a UK/EU student or an international student.

For our campuses in Liverpool, London and Oxford, fees are £9,000 per year for UK Students and £13,000 per year for International students.

Fees at our Glasgow campus are £9,000 per year for UK/EU students and £11,000 per year for international students. From September 2019, these will rise to £11,500 per year for international students.

2 Year Degree

As our degrees are only 2 years, you save a considerable amount on both tuition fees and living expenses when compared to a traditional 3-year degree. So, you can study and graduate with a much lower level of student debt!

As Tuition Fee loan funding does not cover the whole course fee, there is a small amount that you may need to pay through your own means. We understand this is not always easy, especially when you don't have an income, which is why we have developed payment plans to spread the small difference you need to pay. If you are not eligible for funding, we have payment plans for you too.
