Program Description

What You Do - Interior Designers create comfortable, convenient, and aesthetically pleasing spaces that meet the physical and psychological needs of their occupants.

Where You Do It - For students interested in a traditional course of study at an interior design school in Missouri, we offer a fine arts bachelor's degree in interior design as part of our college design program in Parkville, MO, on the University's home campus.

What We Do - The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design is a professional training program and a comprehensive course of study.

Interior Designers create comfortable, convenient, and aesthetically pleasing spaces that meet the physical and psychological needs of their occupants. Interior Designers are involved with every aspect of an interior space, from planning the layout to shaping the space in three dimensions, to enriching and embellishing the space with materials, finishes, and furniture.

Professional interior designers must be able to communicate their design ideas to clients via presentation boards, models, and color renderings as well to the contractors who will build their designs via construction documents. Interior designers must design spaces that meet life safety codes, the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and sustainable design standards.

How We Do It - Building on the art and design principles introduced in the foundations year, each semester of the interior design sequence includes an interior design studio, a technical skills studio and a related lecture course, with projects increasing in complexity throughout the Interior Design curriculum.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree culminates in a two-semester Senior Seminar in which students research a project type and write a program to guide the design of their thesis project.

The BFA program includes six credit hours of upper-level electives. Students may choose from the internship, study abroad, a special topics course or an upper-level art course. Students in the Honors Academy may apply their honors project courses to this requirement.
