The course of study for photography and new visual media

Style models set upsets, arrange to light, obsess over details. Look around the city, scouting for the best locations. Capture moments. Blend together analog and digital. Research motifs experiment with image design. Sound like your thing? On the Bachelor’s course of study in photography, you have plenty of opportunity over six or seven semesters to develop your visual language.

Your studies

On the internationally recognized B.A. Photography course, you plumb the inexhaustible depths of image design in creative freedom and discover your own style.

You will acquire a routine understanding of the use of modern and traditional techniques of photography. You will create your own art projects and learn how to professionally carry out assignments according to customers’ wishes.

You will be qualified in designing image content and aesthetic effects in a conscious and targeted way – allowing you to convey emotions and visual messages.

At the design Akademie Berlin in Aufbau Haus, you will have access to the latest camera and studio technology, generous studios and high-performing computers for digital image processing.

Skilled university teachers will support you throughout the course of your studies – you will be encouraged and challenged.

Your career prospects

Graduates of the Bachelor of Arts in Photography will have mastered a wide variety of forms of photographic image design and will have extensive, methodical, strategic and conceptual media skills.

You will be able to work, for example, in applied areas of portrait, fashion, editorial, advertising, product, and reportage photography.

Other professional fields are also available within the new image visual media (CGI, Stereo3D, 360° x 180°, VR/AR) or in the fields of curating and image editing and in artistic photography.

The internationally recognized Bachelor of Arts offers a professional foundation for immediate career progression.

Your application

The admissions process for the B.A. Photography includes submission of a portfolio with 15 of your own works and a personal admissions interview.

B.A. Photography – Partnerships and university collaborations

3IT – Fraunhofer HHI

  • Since 2010: 3D research group, stereo camera prototypes test, regular excursions and stereo projections in 3D cinema at 3IT - Innovation Center for Immersive Imaging Technologies, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute.

IFM Wolfen

  • Since 2015: Joint practical projects as well as regular excursions and exhibition visits to the Wolfen Industry and Film Museum.


  • Since 2016: CTM preliminary exhibition “Spatial Allocation” and festival documentation as a partner to the Transmediale festival for art and digital culture berlin.

Merz Akademie Stuttgart

  • Since 2011: University exchange of students and lecturers, guest speeches, joint collaborative projects and exhibitions in 3D/VR with the New Media Pathway at the Merz Akademie Stuttgart.

Film School Łódź

  • Since 2013: collaborative photography exhibitions and publications, visits from international arts festivals, regular university exchanges of students and lecturers with the Film School Łódź (Poland).
