Introduction
Briefly about the focusThe bachelor's program in arts and crafts is based on materials, technology and artistic processes. Based on your chosen specialization in ceramic art, you examine the material clay through different ways of expression and contexts. The field of ceramic art is constantly evolving in dialogue with other art areas, society and history and can include everything from the hand-turned cup to clay-based performance. Courtney Cook / UnsplashAbout the educationThe education alternates theory and practice and encourages you to think independently, critically and creatively. You will be guided for three years towards an increasingly independent and complex work in the area. Great emphasis is placed on your artistic development where discussion and supervision, both individually and in groups, is an important part of the teaching. During the training, we make recurring exhibitions, study visits and trips where you get to meet audiences and professional artists. This gives you a good insight into what is happening in contemporary arts and crafts. Courses in visual design, theory and history, writing and presentation techniques take place together with students from the specializations in jewelery and textile art, as well as seminars on topics related to artistic creation and the role as a professional artist. Teaching in materials and techniques is generally focused on the ceramics area, other workshops can be used if space allows and in consultation with responsible technicians. After the studiesThe education gives you the conditions to work as an artist with special knowledge in the field of ceramics. The education also prepares you for further studies at the advanced level. That's how it is to studyThe teaching The first year you are introduced to the field of ceramic art through various techniques, working methods and expressions. You also get to research and develop your work process and your artistic language. During the second year, you acquire in-depth knowledge of technology, method and expression by concentrating on themes in longer courses and projects. You also get the opportunity to put the ceramics art area and your own artistic language in relation to the outside world, the present and history. In the third year, you build on your knowledge and use it to independently formulate your projects within the framework of courses and assignments. In this way, you get to establish and strengthen your artistic language. During the spring semester, you complete a degree project where you get to show your ability to independently pursue an in-depth artistic work within a given time frame. Premises At HDK -Valand, we strive to provide as complete an environment as possible, but we also collaborate with other departments within the university and external actors.
