The general aim of the programme is to train competent professionals for the fashion business in textiles, apparel, retailing, design and related organisations. These professionals play an active role in the development of the global fashion and textiles industry in local and overseas markets. In addition to professional competencies, the programme cultivates students’ other essential competencies, such as entrepreneurship, social media marketing, and business analytics, expanding graduates’ skillsets for today’s business environment.
Graduates possess personal excellence in leadership, teamwork, healthy lifestyle and lifelong learning; they become trend leaders, innovators, critical thinkers and creative problem-solvers; they deploy effective communication and interpersonal skills, and show strong biliteracy and trilingualism; and they become responsible global and ethical leaders and citizens who promote social and national responsibility, engage in local and international affairs, and exhibit cultural and aesthetic appreciation with a global perspective.
Based on their desired careers and academic performance, students can choose one of the following five specialisms under the BA Scheme.
DesignThe design specialism nurtures students’ creativity and design ability, develops their awareness of current and emerging technologies in the fashion and manufacturing environment, and promotes their understanding of the supporting marketing and business practices.
Knitwear Design and TechnologyThis specialism is similar to that of the Design specialism in that it intends to nurture creativity and design ability. In addition to a general education, students attain the essential knowledge and skills of a knitwear designer.
Retail and MarketingThis specialism equips students for the global fashion business. Students learn the fundamental management principles, contemporary practices and operational knowledge of global fashion retail and marketing. In particular, it develops students’ skills in defining, analysing and solving business problems in fashion retail and marketing, from fast to luxury fashion, and from fashion accessories to lifestyle products. Emphasis is placed on fashion sourcing, buying, market research, branding, digital marketing, omnichannel distribution, social media analytics, store management and the distribution of fashion products in both local and global contexts. This specialism ensures that students attain the necessary professional skills to initiate and carry out individual and team research projects. Students also acquire managerial, analytical and problem-solving skills for business from local and overseas internship opportunities.
Intimate Apparel and ActivewearThe aim of this specialism is to ensure that students have the necessary academic and practical knowledge of intimate apparel and activewear, including the integration of design and technology. It provides students with a supportive and inspiring learning environment to create imaginative designs using analytical and problem-solving abilities. It also fosters students’ independent judgement and critical thinking for the new development of intimate apparel and activewear. Students are guided to attain first-hand experience of the latest technologies, modern materials and industrial practice.
TechnologyThe technology specialism nurtures graduates with sound knowledge of fashion products and production processes; who are able to apply their knowledge within a technical, economic, managerial and commercial context; who can respond flexibly to change; and who have the potential to become industry leaders in product development, process innovation and production management in textiles and apparel in local and global markets.
There are also opportunities for placements in the industry to gain on-the-job knowledge and experience in the workplace.
All students start the programme with three common semesters, which provide foundational knowledge of the major activities of the fashion and textiles industry. After the common semesters, each student is streamed to one of five specialisms according to their individual preference.
For the design-related specialisms, i.e. Design, and Knitwear Design and Technology, students have to pass a design-related interview after completing their first year of study.
In principle, all students are offered a free choice of specialism. However, a contingency procedure is followed in the unlikely event that a particular specialism is over-subscribed. Each specialism has a threshold number of students determined by the teaching resources of the Department, and the contingency procedure is applied when this threshold is reached. In this case, students are required to declare a selection list of specialisms in order of preference. The pool of students in the over-subscribed specialism is ranked according to their academic performance during the last three semesters. Students with less satisfactory performance are required to join their second choice specialism.
In the semesters after admission to the respective specialism, compulsory subjects pertaining to each specialism are offered together with a wide range of elective subjects to enrich students’ learning experience. Furthermore, students take mandatory language subjects, General University Requirement (GUR) subjects and Work-Integrated Education (WIE) to fulfil their graduation requirements.
Graduates with 2 years of relevant post-qualification experience can apply for Associate Membership of the Textile Institute (ATI) in the UK.
Graduates can also apply for Graduate Membership of the Hong Kong Institution of Textile and Apparel (GHKITA).

PolyU welcomes applications from qualified candidates from around the world. The following guidelines are for the reference of students who wish to seek admission to PolyU based on non-local qualifications. Qualifications that cannot be found below will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
GCE A-level / International A-level
GCE Advanced Level or International Advanced Level with passes in 3 AL, OR 2 AL and 2 AS, subjects
(This is only the minimum eligibility criteria. Applicants who gain admission, typically, attain at least BBB in 3 AL subjects.)
International Baccalaureate (IB)
A minimum score of 24 with at least grade 4 in 2 Higher Level subjects
(This is only the minimum eligibility criteria. Applicants who gain admission, typically, attain a score of 30 or above, including bonus points.)
SAT Reasoning Test/ACT/Advanced Placement Test/SAT Subject Tests
A High School (Graduation) Diploma (non-Chinese curriculum) and any one of the following:
a total score of 1190 in the SAT Reasoning Test; or
an American College Test (ACT) composite score of 24;
grade 3 in two Advanced Placement (AP) subjects; or
a score of 600 in two SAT Subject Tests
[English language requirement is waived for those attaining a score of 590 or above in the Evidence-based Reading and Writing in the SAT]
Applicants with good results in the GCE A-level / International A-level or International Baccalaureate (IB) can be granted up to 25% credit transfer upon admission to the 4-year degree curriculum.
Applicants attaining good results in either art subjects (Textile, Visual Arts, and/or Design) or science subjects (Chemistry and/or Mathematics) or business- or commerce-related subjects are all preferred.
Through my four years of university life at ITC, I experienced and learned a lot, especially in my fruitful Years 3 and 4. In Year 3, I had an eye-opening experience through an exchange programme to London.
Other than benefiting academically and personally, I explored the diverse cultures and beauty of different countries. After my London journey, I had the chance, after several rounds of interviews, to participate in a summer internship programme with Shiseido Hong Kong, a well-known, Tokyo-based multi-national cosmetics corporation. I was delighted to find that my ability was recognised. I was assigned to the marketing group, where all of my colleagues were very friendly and willing to coach me. To offer student interns the greatest possible exposure to the company and the industry, Shiseido invests effort and resources in offering training, conferences and personal development programmes. In my final year, I was honoured to represent PolyU at the Future Retail Challenge of the World Retail Congress, held in Amsterdam.
This opportunity gave me a bigger picture of the industry around the world and greatly boosted my self-confidence. My four years at ITC were unforgettable, laying the foundation for a shining career.
Lam Ka Yee Charlie
I had a fruitful school life during my two years enrolled in the BA(Hons) Scheme in Fashion and Textiles (Fashion Technology) (admitted via the senior year intake). I learned about interesting topics related to weaving, knitting, dyeing and finishing. I enjoyed the practical classes most. I had the chance to produce fabric myself and build a deeper understanding of fabric manufacturing principles. I was also lucky enough to gain the opportunity to undertake an internship at Luk’s Button Industrial Limited as an assistant in the Quality Assurance Department. I knew much more about the industry after two months in the factory.
In addition, my summer school experience at the Kyoto Institute of Technology was unforgettable. It broadened my horizons by enabling me to interact with international students and experience traditional Japanese weaving craftsmanship. In my leisure time, I participated in some activities offered by PolyU with my friends, including mountaineering and hand knitting workshop. Through these experiences, I explored new things and added value to my personal development. To conclude, I am glad to have been an ITC student. I grew, learned and met life-long friends at PolyU.

Chung Wing Yi Grace
Studying at ITC was an amazing and unforgettable experience for me. During my four years of study, I learned about fashion sketching, garment construction, fashion marketing, fashion technology, etc. Apart from academic opportunities, ITC provides students with various off-campus learning experiences. One of my most memorable experiences would definitely be the academic exchange programme in New York City. I gained exposure to the international fashion world by living in a foreign city for a semester and making friends from different countries. Nonetheless, I had the chance to be a dresser during New York Fashion Week. Having the chance to study overseas was really wonderful. It expanded my understanding of different cultures and reminded me to always keep an open mind.
ITC graduates are equipped with holistic technical skills and industry knowledge. I had two internship opportunities in my final year. They were quite challenging and demanding. I developed the well-rounded skills that are required by the fashion industry, such as problem-solving skills, interpersonal communication skills and a creative mind. My career path started with the skillsets and knowledge that I gained from ITC and my internship experience.
I have had a strong interest in fashion design since I was a kid. I was worried about applying to the ITC programme because of my immature drawing skills. At last, however, I was admitted to the programme, and I later realised that ITC welcomes everyone who loves and is passionate about fashion. The professors treasure your intention and attitude towards fashion more than the technical skills you possess at this early admission stage. As mentioned above, you will learn many more fundamental skills before you pick your specialism and enter your senior year. Last but not least, if you really have a strong interest in fashion, please do not hesitate to choose ITC at PolyU.
Fan Kam Wai Isaac
Fashion focuses not only on fashion design but also on retailing, marketing and technology, which involve comprehensive knowledge of textiles, technologies, the fashion industry and the supply chain. I am studying fashion retail.
The professors not only teach management skills and theories but also emphasise critical thinking and independent problem-solving skills. Besides, ITC supports and encourages students to extend their vision globally and enhance their fashion knowledge through, for instance, internships, overseas exchange, international competitions and expert sharing talks. These activities give me a practical and effective platform to equip myself. In summer 2019, I joined Lane Crawford China in Shanghai as a student intern serving in the womenswear department. I gained a holistic vision and work experience in the world of luxury brands. This was invaluable to my career path.
