Programme aim

This qualification provides students who have a particular interest in the service sector a range of specialised learning in the tourism and hotel/hospitality industry. The specialist knowledge gained from the Hotel Management major is to clearly give advantage to students who wish to pursue careers in the hotel/hospitality industry. Similarly, the Tourism Operations major allows for specialist advantage in the nature of Tourism operations.

Those choosing to study the degree without majors are able to determine their learning to accommodate diversity in both tourism operations and hotel management. Students' study is complimented with business, management and communications skills enabling graduates the ability to contribute in hotel/hospitality and tourism at varying levels of decision making.

Award information

To achieve the award of theBachelor of Tourism Management, students must pass a total of 360 credits, including:

  • a maximum of 15 credits at Level 4;
  • a maximum of 150 credits at Level 5;
  • a minimum of 120 credits at Level 6;
  • a minimum of 75 credits at Level 7.

No Major

  • 210 compulsory credits;
  • 60 credits from the options list; and
  • 90 elective credits.

Single Major

  • 210 compulsory credits;
  • 75 credits in a chosen major and 30 additional credits from the options list; and
  • 45 elective credits.

Double Major

  • 210 compulsory credits;
  • 150 credits in two chosen majors (75 for each major) from the options list.

Special Awards

By completing the requirements for a single major, students may achieve the award of the Bachelor of Tourism Management, with an endorsement in Tourism Operations or Hotel Management.

By completing the requirements for a double major, students may achieve the Bachelor of Tourism Management with two endorsements for both of the majors.

Knowledge and skills you will gain

Graduates will be able to:

  • apply fundamental management principles including organisational management, accounting, and marketing;
  • produce, analyse and synthesise empirical data contributing to well-informed decision-making;
  • exploit business models to construct practical tourism industry solutions;
  • refine verbal and written communication skills, including the appropriate use of technology, to achieve workplace proficiency that meets or exceeds standards expected by employees;
  • understand the nature of the tourism industry, and the sound management of tourism related businesses;
  • think independently and critically with respect to the management of tourism industries in both domestic and international contexts;
  • manage a tourism related business/organisation in a multicultural environment, apply research techniques to real-world situations, as part of their development as independent and effective problem-solvers; and
  • pursue an area of interest.

In addition, graduates are likely to gain employment in a diverse range of organisations, including hotels, attractions, airlines, consulting companies, regional tourism operations, educational institutions and government. Some graduates may also enter into postgraduate study in tourism management in New Zealand or overseas.
