The Undergraduate Degree in Product Design, majoring in Transportation Design is equivalent to a University Degree (240 ECTS). This degree prepares professionals who are capable of designing not only vehicles, but also transportation systems and accessories related to the sector.
Transport design is a discipline that involves far more than designing cars: transport demands adaptation and variety in order to respond to different needs, from motorbikes for use in the city to planes with an unimaginable interior design and ships in an infinite variety of sizes and with technologies to make them self-sufficient.
Whatever the mode used (land, sea or air), designs for transporting products or people require a broad, overarching vision that fits current needs.
The training given at IED Barcelona includes not only the latest techniques and technologies for designing and styling vehicles (cars, buses, planes, ships, etc.) but also overall solutions that seek to go beyond and predict the needs that could arise in terms of transportation.
Professional outcomes: car interior and exterior designers, motorcycles, ships, aeronautical sector, public transportation, color&trim, 3D modelling, etc.
Transport design is going through a far-reaching process of change: today's cars are very different from those of yesterday, as they now incorporate technology that has radically transformed them, with new fuel systems, new tools, applications, segmented uses, increasingly sophisticated interactions that give users a new experience and new marketing systems.
The Undergraduate Degree prepares professionals who are capable of designing not only vehicles, but also transportation systems and accessories related to the sector. It prepares interior and exterior designers for transportation vehicles able to confront the commercial, psychological and social factors related to mobility.
In this course, students will learn to understand aspects like the psychological and emotional mechanisms of consumers, citizens or users, and the concepts of transportation, vehicle and culture held by the different reference targets. The degree helps the participants to understand and interpret the needs and expectations of the public, while at the same time maintaining creativity, style, trends and product life cycles.
Experience in this area, in addition to the collaboration with large companies working in the sector, allows students to develop a particular competence that is both theoretical and practical, a typical trait of transport designers. The methodology emphasizes a constant comparison between technical and theoretical knowledge and their concrete application to creating and developing increasingly difficult projects.
In the first year of the course the transport design students work with other specializations to acquire a basic methodology and creative process. The focus of creativity is the designer's own experience, in what we call the Internal Environment. In this year, students become familiar with the materials, tools and techniques they need and find out how ideas take shape using the criteria and resources used.
The second year concentrates on developing each individual's creativity, as they start to study specialization-related tools, such as packaging, clay, Key sketch, Chartpaks felt tip pen, Alias and graphic communication.
The second year continues with learning research methods, processes and tools that make it possible to answer the specific needs of people and companies in the Immediate Environment. This methodology shows future designers that their own needs are not those of others and they learn to understand them and to work to solve the specific needs of the projects presented to them. The technical level rises with the young designers' ability to express their ideas and control their development. Students start to collaborate on projects with companies.
The third year is a great leap forward. Students become familiar with the professional world, by including management subjects, more complex projects and a greater demand for achieving results. At this point, students are able to create using a solid technical base and creative methodology. A demand for professional rigour appears, and the implementation of professional codes that will allow them to develop professionally. At this stage, students will tackle projects for people who have fewer links with transport (geographical, generational, cultural or economic), bringing their education closer to the reality they will find on leaving IED Barcelona.
Students will now be working on projects with real briefs and challenges presented by companies.
In the fourth year students must demonstrate their ability to engage in one of the professional roles to which they aspire as a designer trained at IED Barcelona under the content requirements set by the Ministry of Education and the Catalonia Regional Government. Their technical training is complete and the designers face the challenges of multidisciplinarity, a long-term vision and the services associated with their particular specialization. We call this the Complex Environment.
Students must prepare a portfolio with a professional ability that displays their individuality as creators and opens up the doors to the professional world.
Finally, young designers must show that they are now potential professionals by solving a real challenge: the final project, proposed by a prestigious company selected by IED. They must present their projects both academically and for a real client, who will evaluate whether they are ready to work either in their own company or for someone else.
The degree offers a formative path that teaches students to comprehend and anticipate the demands of the market, by negotiating with business intentions and translating them into a properly defined project that can be manufactured. It emphasizes the importance of the concept, in order to predict consumption trends and styles, based on an understanding of the demands of the market and social needs.
The course also provides the students with a knowledge of production materials and technology so that they can bring their projects to life. In addition to a theoretical understanding of the project, students will focus on analysing technologies, function, ergonomics and usability.
