Sociology is the study of basic traits, values, and beliefs and how the intersection of these concepts influence the behavior of individuals, groups, and society. The bachelor’s degree is designed to prepare students to confront the basic challenge of understanding ourselves and others more fully. Sociology students will develop a sociological perspective by actively questioning the way our society operates and why the social structure provides privilege for some while disadvantaging others. Through completion of a well-rounded liberal arts core, courses in comparative theory, historic and present-day policy, and applied research dealing with human subjects, sociology majors will be prepared to succeed in career paths or graduate schools which demand a flexible, resourceful, critically thinking individual.
