We believe that by embracing diversity, we are in a position to create a flexible environment in which students can discover their own direction.
Students of the Illustration department at the Willem de Kooning Academy (WdKA) learn to work and study together as a community. Within this community, the department actively encourages the broad range of learning opportunities made possible by contributions from individuals of various backgrounds and various approaches to illustration.
We aim to avoid constraining students within specific branches of illustration. We believe that by embracing diversity, we are in a position to create a flexible environment in which students can discover their own direction. The focus within the department is on three specific areas of the profession: narrative, informative, and authorial illustration.
We want students to be able to share stories, provide information and express opinions through visual works. We focus on products such as publications, animations, installations, events, identities and games. During the four-year study programme, students progress from an initial focus on their major specialisation of Illustration, toward becoming skillful interdisciplinary practitioners active within either commercial, social or autonomous professional practices. We prepare our students for career opportunities in the creative industries. Our alumni work as freelancers, within collectives, or for commercial or institutional employers.
Students also have the opportunity of participating in an exchange programme with partner institutes in: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
Clients of WdKA alumni include: Artbox, the Ambassadors, De Correspondent, Elle, Funky-E, Guerilla Games, Jora Vision, Trouw. Our extensive network of distinguished partners includes: The Dutch Professional Organisation for Designers (BNO), Flow Magazine, HEMA, H&M, In60Sec, Metropolis festival, Mirabeau, Loulou & Tummie, Paladin, Playground festival, De Volkskrant, Worm, Shop Around, Villa Zebra.

A selection of 10-15 works which were preceded by a creative process
For example: designs, objects, photos, films, games, animations, fashion (accessories), furniture, models, drawings, posters, campaigns, paintings, usable artifacts and sculptures. You can publish and present all of this in a neat traditional portfolio folder, but you can also use different methods: 3D work can be brought in a (cardboard) box, digital work can be presented on a laptop or tablet.
Please note: apart from these works, please show us some other things you created. Make a careful selection between the two. That way, we can assess to what extent you have an insight in your own qualities and your own work.
