Overview

Economics is the art of meeting unlimited needs by using limited resources in the most productive and efficient way possible. Macroeconomics deals with the economy in general (e.g. unemployment, inflation, exchange rate market, foreign trade, etc.). Microeconomics deals with the maximization of the smallest economic units (companies, sectors, and consumers). Econometrics aims to detect the variables in micro- and macroeconomics, and the relationship between these variables by using statistics, mathematics and econometrics. Econometrics helps us to find answers to the economic questions that arise in today’s world, such as why there is unemployment, how can this problem be solved, why there is inflation, what kind of policies are needed in order to protect the economy against unemployment and inflation and why increases in exchange rates occur. These fields offer numerous opportunities for study. Graduates from the Department of Economics can work in economic research institutions, like the Central Bank, TUIK (Turkish Statistical Institute) and SPK (Capital Market Board). Graduates from the Department of Economics can also find employment in areas that hire business school graduates, such as public accountancy companies, administrative law judgeships, and other public institutions.

Program Profile

Located on the Turkish Riviera and within an international academic environment, Antalya Bilim University offers an attractive 4-year undergraduate program in Economics that prepares students for a variety of stimulating careers in academia and (multi-)national companies and governmental institutions. The programme puts a strong emphasis on the understanding of the theories and techniques to analyse contemporary economic problems but also gives students the opportunity to develop their individual academic profile by choosing from a broad area of non-area elective courses from the fields of social and political sciences, law, engineering or foreign languages to learn a second language as Spanish, Chinese, German or Russian. All courses are taught in English. First and second-year students can apply for an Erasmus+ grant to study abroad in Europe for either one semester or one full academic year. The Erasmus year typically takes place in the second or third year, and current partner universities include the University of Lodz, Paneuropean University Bratislava, and the Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Prerequisites:

  • An interest in how the distribution of money and resources can affect and shape the world we live in
  • The ability to think logically and clearly and the capacity to work with both abstract concepts and models
  • Proficiency in English (the general language of instruction at ABU). Antalya Bilim University also offers an English preparation class for the students who want to increase their English proficiencies

Recognition of the Prior Education

Students are admitted to our department via central placement by OSYM, Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS), domestic and international inter-institutional horizontal transfer conditional on success, horizontal transfer within the school conditional on success, horizontal transfer between institutions and within the school regarding central placement points.

Students admitted to our department may request that the courses they have been successful in from the undergraduate or associate degree programs that they had been enrolled before enrolling in the department can be adapted to the curriculum of our department. This request is made by a petition to the Faculty Dean at the beginning of the academic year by which the student must have completed the English Preparatory School if necessary.

The requesting student is required to add the original of the transcript to the petition. The adjustment process is carried out in accordance with the principles determined by the board of directors and the commissions assigned by our faculty. The course contents and ECTS load are taken into account in the adjustment process. In the compliance process, a decision is made by evaluating the knowledge of the students, who have especially taken courses from the faculty departments and colleges other than the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, on economics. In the evaluation of the compliance demands of the international students enrolled in our department with the horizontal transfer between institutions, it is taken into account whether the courses taken from abroad are compatible with the national program qualifications for the field of Economics.

Employment Opportunities

Why are some countries rich while some others are poor? What are the drivers behind unemployment or inflation? How do people respond to incentives and how do we efficiently distribute the means of production in a world where resources are limited and inherently scarce?

Economics is a broad discipline that helps us to find answers to these questions and whose applications include finance and banking, health, immigration, and environmental issues. Studying economics opens many exciting and stimulating career paths in both the public and the private sector. Typical jobs for graduates in economics include journalists, professors, governmental advisors, consultants and private sector employees of large (inter-) national banks and companies.
