The core program consists of courses that address some of the most important texts and artifacts in the cultural legacies of Europe and the world.
All students receive a foundational training in the basic tools of economic analysis and modeling, as well as an introduction to political theory and social and historical studies. At the advanced level, students choose one of the following areas of concentration:
German Language Study
Language study in German from beginner to advanced level is available throughout the program. All BA in Economics, Politics, and Social Thought candidates must demonstrate intermediate proficiency in German by the end of their second year.
Electives in studio arts (theater, dance, painting, filmmaking, art production) are available, as is a wide range of electives in philosophy, art history, literature, and social theory.
Study Abroad (optional)
Study abroad in Europe (through the ERASMUS network) or the United States (at Bard College or its affiliated programs and campuses) and around the world (within the Bard Network or through Bard College Berlin's international exchange agreements) is possible in the third year.
An internship program supports the undertaking of practical training in the work of political and cultural organizations, public or private, for academic credit. Internships should be undertaken in the third year of the BA program.
Regular assignment work for seminar classes is designed to ensure that students progress toward successful independent research, reflected in the BA thesis in the fourth year, which is completed under the supervision of an individual faculty member.
The degree prepares graduates for further study in politics or economics, or for careers in the fields of public policy, international relations, economics, or political science.
Over the last decade, many young adults have attended a summer course or completed an Academy Year or Project Year at the college. In 2012, students in the first BA cohort graduated. Future graduates will join a network of alumni/ae who are studying and working around the world. After graduation, alumni/ae remain connected, professionally and personally, to the college and to their friends and professors.
