Bachelor of Science in Construction Management in Refurbishment and Maintenance

GMIT Castlebar Campus


The programme provides graduates with highly marketable skills in the areas of CAD, surveying, construction management and construction technology. Strong emphasis is placed on communications - a critical element in the successful completion of construction products. Numerous site visits are also undertaken throughout the first two years of the programme. The emphasis of the programme is practical, familiarising the students with planning and organisational techniques used in the industry, with particular emphasis on the use of up-to-date methods of construction design and management.

The final year of the programme provides an understanding of the current theory and practice in the building refurbishment and maintenance management sectors.

It emphasises the effective use and protection of buildings and the protection of the environment in the long-term.

Programme modules may include the following:

Mathematics for Construction, Surveying for Construction, Architectural Drawing, CAD, Construction Technology and Building Services, Building Science, The Construction and Civil Engineering Industry, Structural Mechanics for Construction, Construction Materials, Contracts and Procedures, Construction Management/ Health and Safety; Quantities and Estimating; Conservation, Structural Steel Design and Detailing for Construction and Communications, Reinforced Concrete Design and Detailing for Construction, Building Surveying Theory & Practical, Construction Technology/ Building, Contract and Legal Studies, Building Economics, Building Management, and Group Integrated Project.

Follow-on Studies


Graduates are eligible for the BSc (Honours) in Construction Management programme in GMIT (Galway) and at other institutes. Graduates are also eligible to apply for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sustainable Building Technology in GMIT Castlebar.

Entry Requirements


Pass (Grade D3 or better) in five (5) Leaving Certificate subjects including Mathematics and English or Irish with a minimum of 140 points.
