Introduction
Computer Science is the study of computer systems, including the architecture of computers, development of computer software, information processing, computer applications, algorithmic problem-solving, and the mathematical foundations of the discipline. The Computer Science major provides professional education in computer science to prepare the student for graduate study or for a career in the computing field. Students learn concepts and skills needed for designing, programming, and applying computer systems while also learning the theoretical and mathematical foundations of computer science. They have sufficient freedom in the program to pursue other academic interests in the liberal arts, sciences, and engineering to complement their study of computer science. The Computer Science program at Stony Brook University which SUNY Korea's program closely follows is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. Many students prepare for their professional careers through internships at local companies. Computer science graduates are recruited heavily, and career opportunities include developing software systems for a diverse range of applications such as user interfaces, networks, databases, computer games, cybersecurity, social networking, smart energy, mobile computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, forecasting, web technologies, and medical, communications, satellite, and embedded systems. Many are employed in the telecommunication and financial industries, and some are self-employed as heads of software consulting companies. History Established in 1969, the Computer Science Department at Stony Brook University is consistently ranked among the top Computer Science research departments. A Gourman report indicated Stony Brook’s undergraduate program was ranked 15th nationwide and 2nd in New York State. The most recent NRC survey ranked it among the top 20 graduate programs in the U.S. The department is the largest unit in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and is among the largest on the campus. Our faculty and students work closely together in an open, collegial atmosphere. The department is active in many of the major research areas in computer science with specialization in Algorithms and Complexity, Architecture and Organization, Big Data, Biomedical Informatics, Computational & Systems Biology, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Assurance and Security, Information Management, Intelligent Systems, Networking & Communication, Programming Languages, Software Engineering, Smart Energy, Systems Fundamentals and Visualization. The department is the primary participant in the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), a $230 Million High-Tech Center at Stony Brook and one of a handful in New York state. Mission The Computer Science Department has established the following missions: Educate undergraduates for professional jobs; Educate MS students for development jobs; Educate Ph.D. students for academic / R&D jobs; Conduct first-class research; Secure research funding; Serve the Stony Brook College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS), Stony Brook University and SUNY Korea, and the professional community; Interact with and transfer technology to industry; Collaborate with research institutions such as Brookhaven National Labs, Cold Spring Harbor Labs, and the Long Island, NY and IFEZ, Korea communities; and Interdisciplinary interaction with other Stony Brook University and SUNY Korea units. CS Undergraduate Program Educational Objectives: Establish themselves as practicing professionals or engage in advanced study in computer science, information technology, or related areas. Advance professionally through organized training or self-learning in areas related to computer science and information technology. CS Undergraduate Program Outcomes The CS Program enables the students to achieve, by the time of graduation: An ability to apply knowledge of computing and mathematics appropriate to the discipline An ability to analyze a problem, and identify and define the computing requirements appropriate to its solution An ability to design, implement, and evaluate a computer-based system, process, component or program to meet desired needs An ability to function effectively on teams to accomplish a common goal An understanding of professional, ethical, legal, security and social issues and responsibilities An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences An ability to analyze the local and global impact of computing on individuals, organizations, and society Recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in continuing professional development An ability to use current techniques, skills, and tools necessary for computing practice An ability to apply mathematical foundations, algorithmic principles, and computer science theory in the modeling and design of computer-based systems in a way that demonstrates comprehension of the tradeoffs involved in design choices An ability to apply design and development principles in the construction of software systems of varying complexity.
