Never Miss a Beat

Frame your worldview through the lens of society’s evolving communication and media systems.

In a fast-changing digital world, media literacy is crucial for success across all professions. Learn how to analyze media by taking a wide, interdisciplinary focus. Classes cover media law, journalism, digital production and visual communication.

Pitch your own stories and gain practical experience with media production. Your small, hands-on classes at Colby-Sawyer will give you opportunities to sharpen your content creation skills in video, social media, print, web and other media.

A Capstone project, a required internship and multiple project-based courses will give you the experience employers are looking for to develop, manage and deliver branding, marketing and public relations messages across a variety of platforms.

Colby-Sawyer also offers a minor in communication studies that complements any program of study. The minor will broaden your career opportunities and give you a working knowledge of essential communication principles no matter your major. For complete information about major and minor requirements and course offerings, please refer to the college catalog.

Get the Scoop

With access to professional equipment, an editing suite and podcast studio, you’ll have the resources you need to produce your own creative endeavors. Present your work at Windcrossing, Colby-Sawyer’s very own film festival. In addition to short films, Windcrossing has sponsored audiobook and theater projects featuring community members.

Or, take advantage of Colby-Sawyer’s relationship with the Movies from Marlboro film-intensive study-away program. You’ll spend a semester learning stagecraft from experts at Marlboro College in Vermont and produce a full-length film.

Ace Your Next Pitch

Apply your communication studies major to the real world. Your communication and research skills can take you to graduate school or land you a job in advertising and marketing, journalism, film, music and elsewhere.

Internships Take You Behind the Scenes

Build your portfolio and learn first-hand from masters of the trade. Choose an opportunity that will teach you new skills and give you the opportunity to produce well-crafted work. From interning as an editorial assistant in a news station to managing the social media of your favorite brand, the opportunities are endless.

Make Your Debut

You have learned how to communicate effectively and analyze media, you have completed your required internship and have produced an outstanding Capstone. It’s time to make your debut. Lights, camera, action!
