Program Description

Bachelor in Communication Design

University of Applied Sciences Europe

Lay the foundation at B.T.K. for an exciting and creative career in Communication Design. How? With a future-oriented, accredited bachelor program at the B.T.K. – in an environment that sets no limits on the development of your artistic potential either personally or geographically. Practical, personal, with special international opportunities – thanks to our membership in Laureate, the world’s largest university network and to a big partner network dispersed over all continents.

The career opportunities within this former “Graphics Art” field have drastically developed and grown over the course of digitalization. Communication designers transfer complex content into visual communication that is understood. They work in the areas of traditional print media as well as new, dynamic media and online communication. They develop concepts and designs for editorials, posters and ads, books, packaging, advertising, corporate communications, and films or animations.

For many years, even so-called graphic designers with limited specialized knowledge could be successful in this field. Today, multimedia communications require a much more wide-reaching, comprehensive foundation of study – and this will continue into the future, too. Communication designers nowadays not only have creative minds and good noses, they are also border-crossers and sometimes even psychologists. A passion for design as well as pleasure in interdisciplinary work and the famous “thinking outside the box” are all important requirements.

Careers

Communication designers are integrated into the concept phases and strategic planning much more deeply today than ever before. They play a leading role in ensuring artistic-based ideas, strategic, economic, technical, social, and ecological parameters all flow into the design. This makes the career of a communication designer much more complex today, but also more exciting and diverse.

The market for communication designers spans a broad range of jobs. Our alumni work in the creative industry as creative or art directors at advertising or communication agencies, in publishing houses or at government institutions. Many are entrepreneurs or freelancers, or work in design offices. Communication designers provide answers to the questions of our time. They reflect, transfer, visualize, formulate, invent, envision, plan, think, disagree, inspire, and present.

The B.T.K. program

The state-accredited bachelor’s degree program in Communication Design at B.T.K. gives you all the conceptual, design, and technical competencies you need for working in the real world. This mix of international and German design culture and tradition stands for a progressive education in line with the times. A diverse range of inspiration and influence awaits you, as well as an international student body, dedicated faculty, and the most exciting city in Europe for design: Berlin!

During your general studies, you will first learn the basic knowledge and skills needed for the field. You will receive a solid foundation in disciplines such as painting, drawing, typography, layout, photography, and animation. The visual skills you will gain range from simple scribbles to complex animations. History and theory of design likewise create an academic basis for your studies in Communication Design.

Starting in your 2nd semester, you can choose to focus on your own specific subjects within the compulsory modules. Editorial Design, Advertising Design, Ads and Sequencing, or Corporate Identity are just a few seminars that you can choose from.

These are enhanced with interdisciplinary seminars from the areas of Photography (English), Motion Design, Illustration, Game Design, or Interaction Design. In these, you learn to master projects on both a concept and a design level.

A mandatory, 21-week internship awaits you in the third phase of your studies. It serves to give you start in your future career in the professional world. As an alternative, you can choose to complete a semester abroad. The Laureate International Network offers special options and support.

For your 7th semester, you as a bachelor’s degree candidate will apply your newfound knowledge by realizing your own concepts and sophisticated projects. This is the best business card you could ever have for presenting yourself and your work to your preferred or future employer.

B.T.K. offers the hands-on, future-oriented Communication Design program of study at all three campuses: in Berlin, Hamburg, and Iserlohn. Previous degrees or achievements can be accepted; thus, you have the option of beginning your studies at B.T.K. in an advanced semester.
