Bachelor of Science Degrees 2017/2018 in Cedar Falls USA. Geography today is probably not what you think. Geography is a high-tech discipline which examines the science of place and space on the earth. Geographers look at human and physical elements on the earth and wonder why they are located where they are, how they differ from place to place, and how humans interact with and shape the natural world. There are two main branches of geography: physical geography and human geography. Physical geographers study the natural systems of the earth and how they impact, and are impacted by, humans. Human geographers examine the spatial expressions of people. A third and very important area in geography is Geographic Information Science (GISc). GISc comprises a series of tools and techniques, such as geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, global positioning systems (GPS), and cartography. These tools and techniques are used by physical and human geographers to study and understand the complex spatial patterns of the earth. Geography is the study of place, or space, in the sense that history is the study of time. A primary tool of the geographer is the map, whether at the local scale of a shopping center market or at the global scale of climatic change. The constantly changing physical and human landscapes on the Earth’s surface challenge the geographer to provide continuing interpretations of all parts of the world from a spatial point of view. Geography is both a natural science and a social science as... [-]

BS and BA Computer Sciences

The department offers two traditional degrees in computing that serve as the foundation for most CS students. Each of these majors aims at a particular group of students. The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science provides the broader and deeper coverage of the two. It gives students the sturdiest foundation for a long career in computing and also for graduate study in CS. The Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science is a shorter program of study, making it more suitable for a liberal arts-style education. Students still study deeply in one area of CS but have more time for a minor or second major. Students interested in the combination of computer science and business are encouraged to pursue the B.A. major in Computer Science and minor in business, such as General Business Concepts or Business Communication. These programs share, along with the major in Networking and System Administration, a common core of courses that introduce students to computer programming, data structures, discrete mathematics, and computer organization. As a result, students can switch among these majors during their first year of study without losing ground in departmental courses. The B.A. and B.S. in Computer Science and the Computer Information Systems programs offer a flexible curriculum that allow students to specialize in one or more of four areas within computer science: information science, software engineering, systems and traditional computer science. These programs can be completed in three years and have a common first year. The Networking and System Administration (NaSA) program prepares... [-]

Students graduating with majors in chemistry or biochemistry have tremendous career potential whether you are interested in medicine, law, research, teaching, or working in industry (including sales). Some of the career directions our students have taken are listed in the panel on the right. Students majoring in chemistry are not required to obtain a minor. However, many students in the chemistry program obtain minors, or in some cases double majors, in the related areas of biology, earth science, physics and mathematics. We are pleased that nearly 100% of our BS Chemistry or Biochemistry majors who apply to medical schools have been accepted. Many of our BA majors also double major in another area such as Biology, Psychology, Music, or a Foreign Language. All our majors have the opportunity to get involved in research with our faculty. Many of our students are co-authors on published papers and several are co-inventors in patent applications. Research is conducted during the academic year and also in summer, with summer research students being paid a stipend. Each year we send 10-15 students to the spring meeting of the American Chemical Society to present their research results. The Department also has a number of scholarships available for students. There are two scholarships available for incoming freshmen and a variety of additional scholarships and awards available for current students. Our students are also competitive for awards at the Department, College, University, and National level. Finally, students may apply to be laboratory assistants, a paid position helping prepare... [-]
