Physics

A Bachelor of Science is an undergraduate degree in fields related to mathematics, engineering, and science. It generally gives students a good overview of their chosen fields and familiarizes them with college-level lab work and the preferred method of writing scientific reports. These skills can then be taken in to the workforce, or carried over and used in postgraduate study.

Those looking for an answer to the question of what is a BSc in Physics must first understand that the field of physics can be roughly divided into two branches: theoretical and applied. Theoretical physics deals with intangible formulas and new developments, while applied physics takes these developments and finds practical uses for them. Most bachelor degree programs touch on both branches but do not focus too heavily on either, allowing students to get a feel for which area they are best suited.

A Bachelor in Physics can be leveraged into further study in either science or mathematics. It is a well-respected program that is generally in demand in the workforce. Physics programs are taught using a variety of methods, including lectures and lab work to give students a broader perspective on the field.

The cost of a Bachelor in Physics varies depending on which institution you choose to attend. You can generally expect to pay at least four years of tuition as well as the cost of books and lab fees.

Most graduates with a Bachelor in Physics choose to go into either research or teaching. Research can be done at either government or private labs, though teaching must usually take place at the elementary or secondary level unless the student elects to pursue a postgraduate degree in physics.

Many fine schools offer a Bachelor in Physics online. This opens up the number of institutions you can attend to get your degree and also makes it possible to study on a more flexible schedule. The world from a different perspective In the world to many special processes find us back instead. Sometimes these spectacular and clearly present, such as lightning discharges and tornadoes. But sometimes you have what are observant. Did you for example ever wondered why very hot objects will emit light (eg steel piping)? And it is you ever noticed that you both can see through a glass window as you can see a reflection. This remarkable things from nature are all the subject of physics. Physicists are curious Many people simply take these phenomena for what they are, but physicists are just curious and looking with different eyes to the world around them. For them, natural phenomena challenges, fascinating questions to investigate and unravel. Knowledge into new technological developments As a technical physicist you go one step further. You put your knowledge of these phenomena in new technological developments. You should think about making possible a fusion reactor, making cheaper and faster computer chips of plastic or developing better MRI scanners with higher resolution. Difference technical and general physics The program Applied Physics at the TU / e is not called 'technical'. Eindhoven is central to the development of new technologies. This training is a strong emphasis on the use and application of the knowledge gained. In general physics courses in the Netherlands is in a different - more philosophical - way looked physics. NVAO accreditation This training is accredited by the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organization NVAO. [-]

BSc Honours in Physics [+]

BScs in Physics. The primary purpose of the BSc Honours qualification is to consolidate and deepen the students’ knowledge and expertise in Physics, and to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of it. BSc Honours is essentially a coursework degree of which at least 25% (30) of the credits are devoted to a research project and reporting under supervision. The degree demands a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence, and serves as the initial science postgraduate specialization qualification providing students with in-depth scientific knowledge and skills preparing them for research based postgraduate science study. Admission to the Honours programme is subject to the permission of the Head of the Department. A minimum summative mark of 60% in Physics on NQF level 6 (third year) plus 50% in Mathematics on NQF level 5 (second year) is the standard entrance requirement. Completion of the Physics Honours programme requires passing the project (PHY0000) and 9 additional modules, including those compulsory for the chosen specialisation. Not all modules may be offered in any particular year. In the case of modules that are spread across two semesters, the first semester module serves as a prerequisite for the second semester module. As part of the electives, a student may choose a maximum of two modules from Faculty of Science Departments other than Physics, with permission from the Head of the Physics Department. The final mark for each of the theory modules in the Physics Honours programme is calculated as follows: The examination... [-]

Physics aims to observe and explain the behaviour of the physical universe. In particular, physics looks for basic laws, which account for and predict what can be observed. Part of the appeal of the subject is that the physical world is governed by remarkably few such laws and that these apply everywhere and to everything. The structure of the courses reflects the structure of the subject. All students take the core modules and choose further modules from the lists of options. The core modules introduce the fundamental principles, while the optional modules explore their applications in the different areas of physics including: astrophysics, the properties of matter, particle physics and atmospheric physics. The option scheme also allows a proportion of modules to be taken from outside of physics. We encourage students not only to consider modules related to physics, for example in computing, but also modules in philosophy and modern languages. Please download the course booklet for more information. Below is a list of the individual modules in each year and more detail on their content can be found by following the links above. YEAR ONE In the first year, all students take the modules in the Core list. To give you an idea about the way the degree course is structured in the first year, the number in brackets after each module title indicates the number of lectures you will attend e.g. (15L) indicates a 15-lecture module. Core: Physics Foundations (30L), Electricity and Magnetism (30L), Quantum Phenomena (15L), Classical... [-]

BScs in Physics. Physics is the most fundamental of the sciences. Physicists study a broad range of phenomena from large clusters of galaxies to the smallest subatomic particles. Physicist work on improving both our detailed understanding of nature's most fundamental laws, and on using basic principles to explaining the remarkable complexity observed in natural phenomena. The practice of physics is equally broad. Some physicists focus on deep, abstract principles concerning the most basic laws of nature, while others apply physics to make practical innovations in technology. Physics provides the basis of many sciences including chemistry, engineering, material science, oceanography, seismology, and astronomy. Many professionals in these fields began with a bachelor's degree in physics. Many of the innovations and discoveries that have changed our lives, like computers and lasers have were made possible by the work of physicists. Physics continues to have a tremendous impact on new technologies and other innovations. BSc in Applied Physics What is Applied Physics? Physics is concerned with describing and predicting natural phenomena. Applied physics is concerned with the application of these phenomena in technical solutions. Design and construction are important aspects of this. At the heart of society Applied physics is at the heart of society. It forms the basis for many of the products we use in daily life. The degree programme has a strong interdisciplinary orientation, with an emphasis on combinations of subjects: physics with design studies, electrotechnology, systems and control engineering, energy and environmental studies, the physics of life, and nanotechnology. Is Applied Physics for you? Are you interested in technology? Applied physics involves studying not only how phenomena come about, but also how to use them for technical solutions. For this degree programme you need to have an enquiring mind as well as the desire to be creative. This is a programme that focuses on theory and practice. Critical appraisal skills Applied physics is an academic subject, which means that you acquire not only knowledge, but also skills such as presentation, working in a team and setting up and conducting research. We teach you critical appraisal skills, which you will learn to apply to your own work as well as that of others. Tough Applied physics can certainly be described as a ‘tough’ subject. Obviously, in order to study it you need to have an affinity for the sciences, but you don’t have to have the top grades. Most first-year students... [-]
