Our field courses are the most exciting and intensive learning activities offered by the Department of Geoscience. They are unique experiences that provide students with the opportunity to do real Geoscience, work with real scientific data, and learn about natural environments. Teamwork is strongly encouraged, so you can expect to forge bonds with your fellow students that will last throughout your entire university experience and beyond. The geology field courses provide opportunities to study rocks and geologic structures where they are best exposed and most easily interpreted.

Field exercises include orienteering, mapping surficial deposits, measuring sections in sedimentary rocks, and geologic mapping structures in sedimentary and/or igneous & metamorphic rocks. The hydrogeology and geophysics field courses provide opportunities to collect field data using geotechnical and geophysical equipment, then analyze and interpret the data using mathematical and computational methods. Each field course runs for 12 – 16 days off-campus, in either the late summer before classes begin (August – September) or early spring after classes end (April – May). Most field sites are located beside or near roads, but some are only accessible by hiking in, often through the very rugged terrain.... [-]

Bachelor of Science in Biology

Algoma University's biology department is committed to a hands-on learning experience where students are able to establish a personal relationship with their professors. This fosters a very intimate and interactive learning environment not experienced at larger universities.Algoma University's biology students have the unique opportunity to pursue further education and research due to the partnerships that exist between government research organizations and Algoma University. Algoma University and Natural Resources Canada Great Lakes Forestry Centre (GLFC) have shared a partnership since 2003, and as of January 2008, a new partnership has been established with the Ministry of Natural Resources' Ontario Forest Research Institute (OFRI). These partnerships benefit students by allowing researchers to become involved with academic programming, serve as adjunct professors, and provide students with both valuable research opportunities and access to state of the art laboratories. The facilities for both GLFC and OFRI are within a ten-minute walk from campus - this close proximity also aids in student involvement. Students are encouraged to become involved with the various labs in order to gain real-world experience in the field of biology.... [-]

Program Description

The study of physics allows us to understand how the universe works—from the fundamental forces of nature to their effects on matter and the environment around us.

This knowledge enables the development of future technologies and provides a deeper insight into nature. The reasoning, mathematical, experimental and computer skills acquired while earning a physics degree empower our graduates to pursue careers far outside the traditional boundaries of physics—or even science—including medicine, dentistry, business and law. Typically, physics students enjoy scientific experiments, computation and mathematics, as well as solving complex problems and developing new, innovative ideas.... [-]

Program Description

Chemistry is the study of matter — anything that has mass and occupies space. Everything you can touch, hold, smell or taste involves chemistry and chemicals. Chemists design new compounds, materials and processes to serve the needs of society. Some examples include new pharmaceuticals to fight disease, industrial catalysts for efficient manufacturing, and leading- edge nanotechnologies to change the world we live in. Chemists study the relationship between the chemical structure of matter and its properties, and predict and explain how matter changes when it reacts to form new substances.
