The wide applicability of these ideas and the deep connection of Mathematics with the natural sciences have made this discipline one of the most valuable arenas of human inquiry. Combining as it does the greatest creative freedom with the most stringent standards of rigour, Mathematics also happens to be the ideal training ground for learning a broad range of analytical and problem-solving skills. With this understanding of the discipline in mind, Ashoka University’s program of study for the Major in Mathematics has been designed to meet two primary goals: Students should be broadly exposed to the primary areas and the central ideas of contemporary Mathematics (as well as their applications); and Students should learn how to combine rigorous reasoning with creative thinking (the hallmark of Mathematics), and develop a set of broadly useful problem solving skills and strategies. Format of the Major A notable feature of our program is the research seminar in students’ final year, which will give them the unique opportunity to read the current literature and gain experience with research. At the end of their program of study, including the research seminar, we expect students to be able to read and understand mathematical proofs, learn and apply new mathematical concepts, and construct and communicate a correct and rigorous (mathematical) argument of their own. In addition to the relevant Foundation Course (Introduction to Mathematical Thinking), students majoring in Mathematics will start with a gentle introductory series of courses in Number Theory, Real Analysis, and Linear Algebra. They will then undertake a progression of courses that will give them a grounding in Analysis and Algebra, while also taking courses that expose them to the other major areas of Mathematics. In their final year, students will also participate in the Research Seminar. Students completing this program will be well prepared to pursue higher studies further if they wish to, or to take up positions that call for innovative problem solving in concert with strong analytical abilities, mathematical or otherwise.
