The mathematics program strives to fulfill Peru State College’s mission of education, research and public service through three objectives. First, the program is to provide general mathematics courses in support of the majors and programs provided by Peru State College. Second, the program is to provide mathematics courses necessary for students who pursue teaching careers in mathematics. Finally, the program is to prepare students for work in industry or to pursue graduate work in mathematics and statistics.

Program OptionsThe Mathematics Major has two options, a Mathematics option and a Mathematics Education option (field endorsement). If the Mathematics Education option is chosen, attention must be given to the additional coursework requirements for entrance into the Secondary Teacher Education program and to the professional semester. Mathematics is a field endorsement in the Teacher Education program.... [-]

You have probably recently studied maths at school. You may have learnt formulas and how to apply them, how to draw graphs and how to calculate areas and volumes. How did you know that the formulas would work? Who was the first person to use that formula – and how did they know it would work?

Studying Mathematics at degree-level is about much more than just applying what you already know to a series of problems. It is a creative, investigative subject where you will push the boundaries of what is possible to achieve through thinking and then apply it to the world.

Course overviewOur Honours course in Mathematics is designed to be intellectually stimulating and vocationally relevant. This course will appeal to students who like to tackle real-world challenges through the intellectual rigour and purity of approach that is inherent in mathematics. The programme will develop your skills in pure and applied aspects of the subject to an advanced level, combining these with training in probability, advanced statistics and data analysis. In your final year of study, you will tackle a piece of independent research, bringing together this comprehensive portfolio of skills to focus upon a research question of your choice. With support from the University’s careers and placements team, the skills and experience derived from this course should be readily transferable to graduate level employment across a range of sectors.... This major aims to produce graduates in computing mathematics with a strong background of knowledge, skills and tools for mathematical modelling, scientific computation and technical computer software. The major provides students training in the ability to think quantitatively and analyse problems critically.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Major (MILOs)Upon successful completion of this Major, students should be able to:

Integrate into a structure the theory and principles underlying basic applied mathematics, scientific computation and computing software, and recognize the connections among the theory and principles. Apply mathematical and computing methods to a range of problems in scientific, engineering, commercial and other practical applications. Create and formulate mathematical models, evaluate quantitatively alternative approaches and improve the performance and reliability of such models. Use associated computing software and test, then in a laboratory setting to construct models and solve resulting mathematical problems. Acquire work-related experience and effective communication skills necessary to work within a team in an international and culturally diverse workplace. Recognize the need for, and engage in life-long learning. Degree Requirements ... Whether it is your cell phone, the security details for your bank card, the supply of products to shops, image processing in the medical field or a digital prototype for a car: none of these would exist without mathematics. You might not often even give it a thought, but mathematics is an essential part of our modern world.

That is why there is also a constant demand for versatile and widely deployable mathematicians, people who enjoy the challenge of solving problems and designing new products. Is being involved in creating the world of today and tomorrow something that appeals to you? Do you enjoy getting your teeth into a problem and do keep on searching for a solution until something has been solved? If so, our program in Applied Mathematics is the one for you.... [-]
