A Bachelor of Science in Geography is a dynamic and intriguing program that connects students with cutting-edge scientific research, advanced population studies, and the practical application of theoretical material. There are several different facets to this fascinating subject, and this degree acquaints students with all of them.

What is a BSc in Geography? This degree takes a modern look at the changing world and the many factors that influence the way that human beings live. A BSc in Geography provides students with an in-depth understanding of the scientific properties that shape the planet and its many natural processes. Students will also learn about the human geography of the planet by studying population patterns on a large and small scale. This degree has a science emphasis and does much to prepare graduates to enter a workforce shaped by the global economy.

This degree program is designed to give students a strong background in science, specifically disciplines regarding natural processes, climate patterns, and ecology. A firm understanding of these subjects is essential to understanding today’s nuanced scientific dialogue and to participating in it as a peer. This program is a good way to prepare for a job with a research or policy institute, working for a government agency, or working with people to improve human health and well-being.

The cost of this program depends primarily on the institution offering it. Some students pursuing a BSc in Geography may qualify for financial assistance.

Some graduates of this program enter the workforce as government employees, providing valuable scientific data to survey teams, urban planning agencies, and other organizations. Other graduates work for private research and planning firms by providing valuable insight to their various operations. Many administrative positions in financial and industrial sectors will be open to graduates, too.

BScs in Geography. Environmental Geography is the integrated study of the world, its landscapes, places, people and their relationship with the environment. Environmental Geography seeks to make sense of the world we live in and is unique in bridging the environmental and social sciences. ‌ While Physical Geography and Human Geography are disciplines in their own right, Environmental Geography combines these subjects to provide a much-needed capability to study and understand interactions between people, and between people and the environments in which they live. Environmental Geographers have expert knowledge and skills to research, analyse and communicate how the changing environment affects our lives. Their ability to visualise geographical issues at different spatial scales, from global to local and to offer solutions to some of our most pressing environmental problems, ensures that graduates in Environmental Geography are highly sought after by a wide range of employers. This subject may be studied in combination with a number of other subjects What makes us different? Biological and Environmental Sciences (BES) within the Faculty of Natural Sciences is a multi-disciplinary department that participates in research and teaching in a broad range of subjects in the biological and environmental sciences. The principle focus of the research is at the interface between the environment and society. The primary purpose of the BSc Honours qualification is to consolidate and deepen the students’ knowledge and expertise in Geography, and to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of it. BSc Honours is essentially a coursework degree of which at least 25% (30) of the credits are devoted to a research project and reporting under supervision. The degree demands a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence, and serves as the initial science postgraduate specialization qualification providing students with in-depth scientific knowledge and skills preparing them for research based postgraduate science study. For admission to the Honours programme, a Bachelor’s Degree with Geography as one major (65% average in 3rd year) is required. The Head of the Department approves admission to the Honours programme. Five semester modules are required for the Honours Degree, of which Module 3 (Philosophy and Methodology) and Module 7 (Research Project) are compulsory. Each module has an equal number of credits. Examination is at the end of the semester of presentation, except Module 7, which is a year module. Module 3 and every other semester module must be passed with 50% in order to continue with study towards the Honours Degree. A student must pass at least two modules per semester. Semester modules to be presented in a particular year of study are determined annually. BS Geographic Information Science

University Of Northern Iowa

Geography today is probably not what you think. Geography is a high-tech discipline which examines the science of place and space on the earth. [+]

BScs in Geography. Geography today is probably not what you think. Geography is a high-tech discipline which examines the science of place and space on the earth. Geographers look at human and physical elements on the earth and wonder why they are located where they are, how they differ from place to place, and how humans interact with and shape the natural world. There are two main branches of geography: physical geography and human geography. Physical geographers study the natural systems of the earth and how they impact, and are impacted by, humans. Human geographers examine the spatial expressions of people. A third and very important area in geography is Geographic Information Science (GISc). GISc comprises a series of tools and techniques, such as geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, global positioning systems (GPS), and cartography. These tools and techniques are used by physical and human geographers to study and understand the complex spatial patterns of the earth. Geography is the study of place, or space, in the sense that history is the study of time. A primary tool of the geographer is the map, whether at the local scale of a shopping center market or at the global scale of climatic change. The constantly changing physical and human landscapes on the Earth’s surface challenge the geographer to provide continuing interpretations of all parts of the world from a spatial point of view. Geography is both a natural science and a social science as it examines people and their environment... [-]

They are unique experiences that provide students with the opportunity to do real Geoscience, work with real scientific data, and learn about natural environments. Teamwork is strongly encouraged, so you can expect to forge bonds with your fellow students that will last throughout your entire university experience and beyond. The geology field courses provide opportunities to study rocks and geologic structures where they are best exposed and most easily interpreted. Field exercises include orienteering, mapping surficial deposits, measuring sections in sedimentary rocks, and mapping geologic structures in sedimentary and/or igneous & metamorphic rocks. The hydrogeology and geophysics field courses provide opportunities to collect field data using geotechnical and geophysical equipment, then analyze and interpret the data using mathematical and computational methods. Each field course runs for 12 – 16 days off-campus, in either the late summer before classes begin (August – September) or early spring after classes end (April – May). Most field sites are located beside or near roads, but some are only accessible by hiking in, often through very rugged terrain. You must be in reasonable physical condition, fully mobile, confident on slopes and in high places, and mentally prepared for working long days outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions, including hot sun, rain or snow, in places like the Canadian Shield, Alberta prairies, Rocky Mountains and deserts of southwest USA.
