BSc in Geography (Hons)BSc Geography degree students study the natural world and learn about the impacts humans have on the environment. The range of skills geography graduates acquire makes them attractive to a wide range of employers. In the first year, students follow courses that explore geographic issues from the perspectives of natural, physical and social science. In Years 2 and 3 they specialize in physical geography courses. The dissertation provides a unique opportunity to study a topic of particular interest in considerable depth. Fieldwork is an essential part of the programme with trips funded by the School. Trips have included visits to the New Forest, Lake District, and Spain. Successful completion of at least 36 weeks of the optional work placement will result in the award of a Diploma of Industrial Study. Our field courses are the most exciting and intensive learning activities offered by the Department of Geoscience. They are unique experiences that provide students with the opportunity to do real Geoscience, work with real scientific data, and learn about natural environments. Teamwork is strongly encouraged, so you can expect to forge bonds with your fellow students that will last throughout your entire university experience and beyond. The geology field courses provide opportunities to study rocks and geologic structures where they are best exposed and most easily interpreted.

Field exercises include orienteering, mapping surficial deposits, measuring sections in sedimentary rocks, and geologic mapping structures in sedimentary and/or igneous & metamorphic rocks. The hydrogeology and geophysics field courses provide opportunities to collect field data using geotechnical and geophysical equipment, then analyze and interpret the data using mathematical and computational methods. Each field course runs for 12 – 16 days off-campus, in either the late summer before classes begin (August – September) or early spring after classes end (April – May). Most field sites are located beside or near roads, but some are only accessible by hiking in, often through the very rugged terrain.... [-]

BSc in Geology

The mission of Millsaps Geology Department is the creation and development of a community of productive and involved world citizens equipped with a broad and thorough knowledge of the process and specifics of the Earth Sciences. The Department focuses on educating and encouraging students to develop an on-going curiosity and involvement with all elements of their environments so that these future leaders of society incorporate logical, critical assessment of the natural world into the fabric of their individual philosophies.

All students in the Department of Geology are given the opportunity to participate in significant scientific research. Various sponsored projects in basic geology, environmental geology, and geophysics have given students the unique experience of hands-on contribution to real, often publishable, research during their undergraduate years. Field trips to diverse geological terrains help emphasize the hands-on approach. Past field trips have included areas such as the Appalachian Mountains, the Pacific Northwest, southeastern and southcentral Alaska, the Yucatan Peninsula, the central and northern Rocky Mountains, and the greater Yellowstone area.... Upon the first reaction, you might think Geography has little to do with your day-to-day life and even less in regard to what you intend to do for your future career plans. You might think that studying geography is nothing more than memorizing state capitals or learning to plot points on a map. But geography, as an academic field, is about much more than that!

Professional geographers explore and analyze the multitude of connections and relationships between virtually every facet of the places and spaces over the Earth's surface. Therefore, geography is actually the original spatial science. Some geographers have even described the field simply (yet appropriately) as the study of the "why of where?" (Note: Not just the "where?") ... [-]
