The Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science (BCES) is focused on providing our students with the skill sets they need to succeed!
With modern research laboratories managed by our faculty and an emphasis on the natural laboratories provided by the beautiful environments of northern New Mexico, we promote a stimulating learning environment that includes research experience in the lab and the field.
We offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, with an optional focus in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology or Molecular and Cell Biology, and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, with an optional focus in Natural Resource Management or Environmental Monitoring. Associate of Science degrees are also offered in Biology, Environmental Science, and Chemistry. These Associate Programs are designed to prepare students to pursue Baccalaureate Degrees and transfer to four-year programs, either here at NORTHERN or other colleges and universities.
We also have Associate of Applied Science Programs in Wildland Fire Science, Radiation Protection, Viticulture, and Enology, as well as Certificate Programs in Wildlife Fire Science, Radiation Control Technician, Environmental Monitoring, Viticulture, and Enology. These programs are specifically designed to channel students into career paths in Federal Agencies or Industry.
Our mission is to provide high-quality instruction, scholarship, and service to the academic community in the natural sciences—including biology, chemistry, and environmental sciences.
