Prepare to Become a Licensed Math Teacher in Secondary Education

Grand Canyon University (GCU) offers the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics for Secondary Education degree program to provide future middle and high school educators with the mathematics knowledge and hands-on training needed to be successful math teachers in tomorrow's diverse and rapidly changing classrooms.

The BS in math for secondary education program is available as part of a joint venture between GCU's College of Humanities and Social Sciences and College of Education. When you graduate from Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree program, you will acquire the basic skills and tools necessary to earn the secondary education certificate in math. You will also qualify for a middle grades endorsement, which will allow you to teach middle school and high school students.

Programs leading to teacher certification may require practicum hours, state exams, student teaching and an institutional recommendation from GCU.

You must complete a hands-on practicum experience to explore teaching math using a variety of methods and strategies toward middle and high school students. The practicum is completed through a student teaching experience within a real-world secondary classroom in conjunction with GCU's Office of Field Experience.

Since the Bachelor of Science in math for secondary education is a licensure program, you learn the requirements needed to earn teaching licensure for secondary education in math. Due to a shortage of qualified teachers both in Arizona and nationally, the expected employment growth for high school teachers is slightly less, with approximately 53,000 additional high school teaching jobs expected to be available nationally by 2022, with geography and state funding playing integral roles in prospective employment trends.*
