Program Description

Statistical data science is at the core of modern data analytics that turn data into intelligence to inform decision-making and solve challenging problems. Applications range from economics and medicine to social and environmental sciences. This degree covers theoretical and applied elements of modern statistics, and provides training and practical experience in modelling, analyzing and interpreting real data required in the economy, industry and research. The early years of the degree cover basic mathematics, computing, probability and statistics. The final years focus on advanced specialist topics in statistical modelling, data science, machine learning, probability and stochastic processes.

Course content

First Year

Calculus; Introduction to Statistical Science, and optional courses including Logic and Proof, Discrete Mathematics and Software Development.

Second Year

Probability and Statistics; Linear Algebra; Actuarial and Financial Mathematics; Real Analysis, and optional courses including Databases and Software Design.

Third Year

Statistical Models; Stochastic Processes; Bayesian Statistics; Survival Models; Statistical Methods for Social Sciences, and optional courses including Artificial Intelligence and Database Management Systems.

Fourth Year

Time Series; Optimisation; Simulation and Statistical Computing; Further Statistical Methods; Foundations of Statistical Machine Learning; Dissertation and options from a wide choice, including Special Topics in Statistical Modelling (e.g. in Epidemiology, Ecology or Finance), Statistical Computing and Data Visualisation Analytics.

English language requirements

Where English was not the medium of instruction at secondary school, applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.0 Academic (with no element below 5.5).

Application deadline

Our Dubai Campus operates a rolling year-round admissions process: as soon as one intake has closed we begin accepting applications for the next one. It is also possible for you to defer your start date for up to a year.

Most students apply 6–10 months in advance of their chosen intake. We can accept applications up until 3 weeks before the start of each intake but you should note that a late application will almost certainly mean a delay in the provision of essential administrative services, such as your student matriculation card (without which you won't be able to access the library or online services).
