Why choose this course
The University of Surrey is one of the UK’s leading universities for aerospace engineering.
As a BEng Aerospace Engineering student, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art wind-tunnel research facilities and learn from world-leading experts in the field.
Our close links with major companies will help develop your employment skills. You can also hone your practical, teamwork and leadership skills by taking part in one of our successful and dynamic student competition design teams.
This course is professionally accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Aeronautical Society and has excellent employability prospects. 100 per cent of our graduates were in work or education six months after graduation (DiscoverUni, using the most recent data from those who graduated in the 2016-17 academic year).
What you will study
Our aerospace engineering courses encompass advanced materials, design, aerodynamics, space systems, propulsion and the latest in computational and simulation tools.
By using our extensive facilities for aerodynamics and materials testing, including our demonstrator jet engine and flight simulator, you’ll put the theory you learn into practice.
With our research-led teaching, specialists will guide you in areas such as aircraft and environmental aerodynamics, propulsion, computational fluid dynamics and modelling of flows in gas-turbine engines (with links to our Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre).
You can apply to study for either a BEng or MEng (Master of Engineering). The MEng builds on the BEng course with a masters year and is a direct route to a masters qualification. Find out more about the benefits of an integrated masters degree.
"Having everything on your doorstep allows you to have a full and well-rounded life during your studies. I’ve certainly become a lot more confident since starting at Surrey – both academically and socially.” Isobel Adamyk, student

BEng (Hons) - Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) - Accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
You have the option to complete a Professional Training placement as part of this course. This will give you the opportunity to develop your professional, academic and personal potential, helping to prepare you for your future career.
A significant proportion of placement students at Surrey are offered graduate-level jobs or go onto postgraduate study.
Aerospace Engineering placements
A crucial part of all our courses, Professional Training placements provide you with further practical experience, enhancing your understanding of the subject.
As well as enabling you to apply the skills you’re learning, the Professional Training placement also gives you a deeper understanding of your studies and provides you with a head-start as you enter the job market.
Companies that participate in the scheme have included:
Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd
The enhanced interpersonal and management skills that you learn during the Professional Training placement are highly valued by employers. This optional year also provides an opportunity to earn a full-time salary while still enjoying the benefits of being a student at the University.
Many students go on to be offered employment by the companies with which they spend their placement year.
“We’re lucky to have facilities that aren’t available at a lot of universities, with the opportunity to use them from the very start.” David Chaplin, student
Study and work abroad
We give our students the opportunity to acquire international experience during their studies by taking advantage of our exchange agreements with overseas universities or by completing a Professional Training placement abroad.
Want to study at an overseas institution as part of your degree or work abroad during your Professional Training year? Perhaps you would like to volunteer in India or learn about Brazilian business and culture in São Paulo during your summer holidays? With more than 200 partnerships, from 50 different countries worldwide, there is something for everyone.
Not only is the opportunity to go abroad a hugely enjoyable experience, but you will also develop key skills and knowledge that will strengthen your CV and increase your employability.
Please note: the status of the Erasmus+ scheme is dependent on the outcome of the Brexit negotiations.
The international exchange programme offers undergraduate students the opportunity to study abroad at a partner university for either one semester or a full academic year as part of their course.
Currently, for those studying aerospace engineering, this is possible in your second year at one of our partner institutions in:
US (Texas Tech, North Carolina State or Central Florida)
Australia (Monash University)
Singapore (Nanyang Technological University)
South Korea (Seoul National University)
The exchange programme enables you to study and live in another country, without paying extra tuition fees. In doing so you can broaden your horizons, meet other students from around the world, and experience student life in another one of the world's most prestigious universities.
Studying abroad also enables you to become more independent, teaching you how to adapt and adjust to the culture and climate of another country.
In addition, or alternatively, you may wish to spend your Professional Training placement working in another country. Previous students have worked at companies such as Airbus in France, Rolls-Royce in Norway and TE Connectivity in Germany.
