You will graduate as an authority on a wide range of topics, and equipped with the confidence and skills you need for a successful career. Guest speakers and field trips to political organisations enrich the course and provide further opportunities for learning. Through career mentoring events and work experience opportunities, your employability will also be greatly enhanced. Immigration, crime, social injustice and youth unemployment make headline news almost daily. These are the key issues of our time. If you’re interested in such issues and want to understand how social structures impact on people's everyday lives and interactions, or how criminal justice relates to social justice, then you should consider studying sociology and criminology. Combined, these two disciplines develop your sociological and criminological imagination and answer questions about society and its various institutions.

This programme combines the study of East Asian languages with the study of East Asia-related subjects in various disciplines. Compared to the existing single-subject BA East Asian Studies degree, there is less emphasis on language learning. Compared to the existing 2-degree BA Chinese/Japanese/Korean and… degree, there is more space to study East Asia-related courses in a range of disciplines. The programme also differs from the existing offerings in that there is no year abroad included. The programme will be attractive both to students who wish to study East Asia-related subjects without a strong emphasis on language and to students who wish to work at an advanced language level within a more traditional framework, as it is offered at most other universities. Additionally, the nature of the Combined Honours Degree enables you to develop a specialist niche for yourself by studying another subject.

The programme is a 4-year BA (Hons) in Criminology and Sociology. The course is aimed at students who are interested in criminal justice but for whom the broader disciplinary span of sociology is also attractive. A distinctive focus across the programme as a whole is on facilitating the development of a criminological and sociological ‘imagination’. This entails not simply the acquisition of foundational principles, concepts and theories, but a sustained emphasis on thinking with such ideas and approaches through the development of heightened critical reflexivity.

A degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) will develop your understanding of the contemporary world, including financial crises, human rights, environmentalism and cultural conflicts. PPE equips students with the skills and attributes required to be changemakers who, through making sense of the world, are well placed to take action to solve its problems. The multi-disciplinary approach of PPE has too often been the preserve of students from privileged backgrounds, but our aim is to enable a greater diversity of representation in those professions related to PPE - especially in our political system - to the benefit of us all.
