In Year 2 you will take four half unit modules on corporate finance and finance accounting, international business strategy, international marketing and managerial accounting. On the South Asian side you will take a module on Hindi cinema or literature in translation as the core module; you have the option to continue with language study and/or start a different South Asian language or choose from a range of culture modules related to South Asia in the South Asia Department and in other departments on music, politics, economics, law, history, and religion. In Year 3 you will choose two half-unit advanced modules on economics and finance in East Asia; an undergraduate dissertation (ISP) of 10,000 words on a topic of your choice related to management and/or finance in South Asia. On the South Asian side you choose one language or culture module at intermediate or advanced level (alternatively, you can do an Independent Study Project that gives you the opportunity to pursue a topic of personal interest in language, literature, politics, culture, religion, the arts and media, or any other aspect of contemporary or historical India, leading to the writing of a 10,000 - word dissertation under tutorial supervision ); furthermore, you take a module with a regional focus (on Pakistan, Nepal or Bengal). Introductory language modules taught in Year 1 assume no previous knowledge of the chosen language or its script: they start completely from scratch. Modules in modern languages concentrate on all four linguistic skills – understanding, speaking, reading and writing; classes are small and interactive, with students being encouraged to use the language actively from the outset. There is usually a 40/60 balance between coursework and exam in language modules. Many of our introductory language modules have been written especially for our needs by members of the Department staff; and Intermediate and advanced language modules feature a wide range of ‘real world’ teaching and study materials. You’ll combine aspects of international business and marketing with studying a language (French or Spanish), plus the economic, political, social and cultural environment in which international business is conducted. There are two compulsory pathways, namely a language (either French or Spanish) and a Business/Marketing pathway. In addition, a third pathway is chosen from a second language, Politics, Finance, Business Law or Economics. Each pathway contains modules with an international or European content. Semesters 1 - 4 You will take the following subjects: French or Spanish Business or Marketing One of: a second language, Politics, Finance, Business Law, Economics Semesters 5 - 8 In Semesters 5, 7 and 8 you will follow the same pathways but have an increasing choice of options within those pathways. Semester 6 is a compulsory Study Abroad semester which, for students with French as their main language, is usually spent as an Erasmus student at either the Ecole de Management de Strasbourg or ESSEC in Cergy-Pontoise, France. Students also have the option to spend the whole of Year 3 (Semesters 5 and 6) at the Ecole de Management de Strasbourg, subject to the agreement of the Course Director. Students with Spanish as their main language would spend Semester 6 at a University in Spain. Delivery and assessment Teaching combines a mixture of lectures, tutorials and small group language classes. In addition, the use of information technology and native language assistants in French and/or Spanish classes encourages rapid progress. Assessment focuses on a variety of skills gained across the modules studied and ranges from translations to essays, from grammar tests to oral exams and presentations (in both English and the appropriate target language). We use both continuous assessment and final examinations throughout the degree course. Study abroad opportunities Semester 6 is spent studying at a university in Spain or a business school in France. Alternatively, students of French may spend the whole of Year 3 studying at the Ecole de Management, Strasbourg. Students taking two languages may take a year out at the end of Year 2 during which they would work as a Language Assistant in France or another Francophone location, or Spain or Latin America. They will then spend Semester 6 in the country of the second language. In this way the degree offers two lengthy periods abroad in the country of each language studied. Students who are on joint programmes involving both French and Spanish need to ensure that they fulfil the minimum residence requirements for both languages before completing their degrees. For many students, this can be done by undertaking an English Language assistantship in one language area (via the British Council-run scheme) and then spending Semester 6 in the other language area. Where this is not possible, students have to complete Semester 6 in one language area and a minimum of 4 weeks in the other. This 4-week period is usually completed by studying at a language during vacation periods and is done at the student’s own expense. However, we are always happy to explore other possibilities (eg nannying, au pair posts, internships, etc) with students. Career opportunities Graduates from this degree course will be ideally equipped for a career in international business or marketing. Not only will they have command of a language/languages, but their study of the management subjects will have been deliberately orientated towards the international context, with a particular focus on the EU. Recent Stirling management graduates have gone on to a wide variety of jobs. These include advertising, marketing, banking and management. Graduates have secured positions with leading manufacturers and retailers, communications companies, and financial institutions, as well as with a variety of small- and medium-sized businesses. Graduates from this course would also be suited to further postgraduate study across a range of subject areas from finance to marketing. [-]
