The Department of Translation and Interpreting aims to produce graduates who are well-educated professionals in the field of Translation Studies, competent in the various disciplines of translation and interpreting, and capable of functioning in the context of national and international meetings.
In the first year of the academic program, there are courses which aim to improve basic language skills of students like reading, speaking and writing. In this regard, in the first year, the aim is to improve the foreign language skills of students and form a solid background for the written and oral translation courses they will take in the following years. Theoretical and practical courses begin in the second year. In the program, there are courses such as Law, Economy, Technical Translation and Localization and EU Relations which aim at the professionalization of students in written and oral translation in such disciplines. Departing from the idea that Translation Studies is a multidisciplinary field, courses such as “Introduction to Law,” “Introduction to Economics”, “International Foundations and Organizations” which form the basis of the field courses are also included in the syllabus. Our students receive extensive instruction in English grammar, speaking skills and academic writing. Moreover, since they spend four years immersed in oral and written discussion and debate in English, they gain advanced proficiency in the use of language in an applied setting. The increasingly globalized nature of modern society demands experts who are not only competent in other languages but also literate in other cultures. Alongside the literature of the British Isles, students in the department have the opportunity to study other Anglophone cultures and to think critically about questions of cultural domination and autonomy in the context of the history of empire and decolonization.
