Program Description

The BA program in Teaching of English Language and Literature and German Language and Literature takes 3 years and it allows students to improve their English and German language, to get acquainted with the English, American and German culture and to prepare for the profession of a teacher. Graduates interested in becoming fully-qualified teachers must continue in their MA studies or they may find interesting positions where they may use their acquired skills and knowledge of English and German.

What will I study?

Students improve their English and German language, learn the basics of the Dutch language, and get acquainted with the culture and societies of English-speaking countries and German-speaking countries. The courses cover a range of linguistic and literary disciplines together with theories of translation in appropriate depth. The program also includes a wide range of elective courses focusing, for instance, on literature, culture, modern social media, etc. In addition to the study of the two selected subject areas (English Language and Literature and German Language and Literature), the program aims at providing an overview of the broader contexts of education. Students acquire the basics of school pedagogy and psychology and gain an understanding of the organizational conditions of institutional education.

  • Advanced level in oral and written communication in English and German.
  • Ability to analyze various types of texts and media content in English and German.
  • Understanding of the culture in English-speaking countries and German-speaking countries.
  • Knowledge of the most important developments in English and German language and in the English-speaking countries literature and German literature.
  • Familiarity with the psychological and pedagogical theories.
  • Didactic skills.
  • Rhetorical, discussion and presentation skills.

Entry requirements

To apply all the applicants must have a completed high school (secondary school) education. An entrance exam consists of an oral interview (a Skype interview is possible) focusing on the motivation and abilities of the applicants to pursue higher education. Applicants are asked to submit an application form (printed or online application form), a curriculum vitae, a verified copy of their high school (secondary school) diploma (graduates from abroad are asked to submit a copy of a recognition of their education) and a receipt of payment of the application fee (30,- EUR for a printed application or 25,- EUR for an online application).
