BA in International Relations

Cottey College

Program Description

Thank you for your interest in Cottey’s baccalaureate program in international relations! We offer a major and a minor in international relations and a host of survey courses on the main subfields of political science including American politics, international relations, comparative politics, public policy, and public administration. Our program is designed to prepare you for a successful career in public service and for private sector positions at think tanks, non-profits, and the media. Additionally, we closely mentor our students as they prepare for graduate/law school. Our recent alumnae are currently pursuing graduate degrees in public administration and law. The highlights of our program include:

  • Small and diverse classes (average size 8-10), which give faculty ample opportunity to develop a personal relationship with every student. Students also get the opportunity to engage with peers from different parts of the United States as well as from all around the world.
  • A wide variety of electives in international relations that help students cultivate a holistic understanding of the discipline. In addition traditional upper-division courses on the international political economy, international law, and organizations, foreign policy, and research methods, there are a good number of special topics courses on women and global politics, poverty and inequality, Asian politics, transnational environmental issues, and religion and politics.
  • The opportunity to represent the college at the Model United Nations conference at St. Louis every spring semester.
  • The study abroad requirement for majors that allows our students to spend at least one semester—over and above the Europe trip for sophomores—overseas where they take courses for credit and develop a truly international perspective. Our students have traveled to Hong Kong, Mexico, Turkey, Jamaica, China, Japan, South Africa, and spent an entire semester sailing (“Semester at Sea”) as part of the study abroad program.
  • The capstone project for baccalaureate students provides hands-on experience with original research and writing. During the last semester of the program, every student works on the project under the mentorship of a faculty member. The capstone component is designed to improve our students’ problem-solving skills with regard to major policy challenges faced within and across nation-states.
  • An opportunity to attend the Michael Maurer School of Law at Indiana University with a generous scholarship and tuition remission for eligible alumni.
