BA in International Affairs
Vesalius College’s Bachelor in International Affairs equips students with the broad-ranging tools and in-depth capabilities for assessing the most pressing issues in national and global politics.
The BA offers students a broad range of knowledge and skills taught by dedicated professors, as well as senior policymakers, diplomats and senior practitioners based in Brussels. By drawing on the expertise of world-class academics and policymakers, students gain fundamental insights into both the theoretical and practical hands-on dimensions of politics, economics and law. BA students are also able to complete an internship in a relevant organisation, such as at a major Brussels-based institution (ex. the European Union, NATO or the United Nations), NGOs or think tanks. This first-hand professional experience complements and deepens the practical aspects of their studies.
Vesalius College’s department of International Affairs cooperates closely with the Brussels-based think tank the Global Governance Institute (GGI) – a leading research institute and NGO that unites top scholars and diplomats in the field of peace and security, the environment and sustainable development, global economics and global justice. High-achieving Vesalius College students gain exclusive internships and work placements, contributing significantly to our students’ employability and job skills in the world of think tanks and NGOs.
Students are prepared to function in various settings and organisations, including international organisations (such as the United Nations, EU and NATO), and political institutions, ministries of foreign affairs, lobby organisations, NGOs and think tanks.
Vesalius graduates can continue their postgraduate studies in a wide range of fields, including in international relations, European studies, public policy, environmental law, international studies, migration studies, business administration, communications, leadership and management. To complete the International Affairs degree successfully at Vesalius College, a minimum of 180 ECTS is required. Most students complete the intense and rigorous study programme within 3 years of admission to the college. Students are also encouraged to complete a Study Abroad semester at one of our partner universities overseas and take an internship via our prestigious internship programme.
The 180-ECTS degree programme is divided into several different requirements. In general, Students start with the core curriculum, a set of courses that develop the relevant skills, knowledge and abilities essential to the College’s distinctive undergraduate programme.
In addition to the core curriculum, students take major requirement courses. These courses are divided into politics, history, economics, and law.
To give students the opportunity to develop areas of personal and professional interest, Vesalius College requires the completion of major electives and free electives. International Affairs students at Vesalius College may also choose a minor, regardless of their major. However, in order to obtain the ‘Minor’ classification, students must follow all four courses within that Minor.
The capstone course is offered during the final semester of a student’s major and provides an invaluable opportunity to make full use of all of the key learning objectives that the faculty expect the students to have acquired throughout the major. Students have an opportunity to work under the direction of an advisor on an extended research topic in International Affairs. This will prepare them for independent research at the postgraduate level.
