The newly evolved BA Honours in Creative Brand Communications will equip you with advanced strategic thinking skills, an academic platform for further studies into a Masters programme and higher order conceptual and creative communication skills. The purpose of the programme is to develop a portfolio of professional creative work (in the domain of Copywriting, Multimedia Design, and Visual Communication) illustrative of resilient solutions to complex brand communication challenges and an advanced set of skills in the execution thereof. The ability to apply innovative thinking to multiplex problems is what our industry looks for in those passionate about their craft.

How will your portfolio evolve from Degree level?

Your Honours portfolio will complement your final year degree portfolio by showcasing your ability to solve a complex challenge and produce comprehensive creative brand communication solutions. It will demonstrate that you have advance strategic, problem-solving, conceptual and creative brand communication and crafting skills, combined with project management abilities.

What will I cover in the Creative Brand Communication module?

The Creative Brand Communication module consists of a year-long self-proposed 'real-world' project based on a complex creative brand communication challenge. The year-long project is facilitated by interim assessments building towards the final product. Numerous drop-in 'real-world' challenges are introduced where students show the ability to solve problems within a short timeframe adding to the portfolio of work. An extensive reflective process is followed consisting of weekly practical workshops as well as content/theory sessions, including varied 'ways of thinking', such as:

  • Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Design for Social Change
  • Applied Design Thinking (Ideation, Problem Solving, Rapid Collaboration, and Prototyping)
  • Meaningful Brand Practice, Brand Purpose, and Creative Brand Contact Planning
  • Innovation in Creative Brand Communication solutions

Students participate in the annual Brand Challenges where they will work in multi-disciplinary teams to solve a live client brief. Students will conclude the year with a Creative Brand Communication portfolio (exhibited at the annual Showcase), panel and live audience presentation of the year-long project and an industry internship.

How will this impact your career?

One does not step directly into a management or leadership position. You need to prove your worth. An Honours graduate should be able to work on more complex and challenging agency accounts or company projects. They should also be able to fast track with greater agility. Importantly, they can pursue further studies to grow in their influence as creative brand communicators.

Who can apply?

Entry requirements include a cognate Bachelor's Degree or Advanced Diploma (please inquire for specific criteria) in Creative Brand Communication or Fine and Applied Arts; such as Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Multimedia Design, Copywriting, Information Design, Advertising, Creative Writing, Journalism, Fine Art, Photography, Industrial Design and Architecture. Applicants need an understanding of creative and critical thinking and application as part of their undergraduate degree with a strong portfolio showcasing creative work.

Candidates are normally required to have a minimum average of 60% in their third year of their third-year modules of their Degree or equivalent qualification, and they will be required to attend an interview.

Entry requirements

  • An appropriate Bachelor's Degree in a cognate field; or
  • An appropriate Advanced Diploma in a cognate field provided a 360 credit Diploma has been completed or appropriate equivalent.
  • Candidates are normally required to have a minimum average of 60% in their third-year modules of their degree or equivalent qualification, and they may be required to attend an interview.
  • Applicants for the BA Honours Creative Brand Communications must submit a creative portfolio and successfully meet the creative portfolio criteria based on a review by a specialization panel.
