Program Description

Combining traditional and digital marketing, our programme will provide you with the knowledge and expertise required for a successful career locally or globally. In addition to a foundation in business, you’ll gain a sound understanding of specific aspects of marketing, leading to a wide range of career options.

Marketing involves almost every aspect of an organization, from advertising, sales, market research and new product development to the creation, promotion, and protection of a company brand. Through understanding customers and their needs and desires a company can make itself, its goods or its services irresistible to consumers.

Our excellent industry links provide you with opportunities to engage in real life projects and case studies, putting into practice the theory learned throughout the programme. You’ll explore contemporary marketing challenges and study marketing disciplines including consumer behavior, marketing communications, brand management and market research methods, alongside business modules and optional modules from a wide range of subject areas.

You could also take up a funded international exchange placement to study part of your degree at a partner university.

Your career

Graduates enjoy excellent career prospects both at home and abroad in corporate organizations, small businesses and in the public and third sector, in a variety of marketing roles. Those with a particular interest or creative flair can find work in more niche areas such as advertising and public relations.

Year 2

Society, Employability and Business, Essentials of Managing Human Resources, Marketing Design and Creativity, Brand Management, Consumer Buying Behaviour, optional module

Year 3

The Enterprise Value Challenge, Business Research Methods, International Marketing Strategy, International Marketing Communications, Digital Business and Marketing, optional module

Year 4

Honours Dissertation, Changing Perspectives in International Marketing, Global Brand Marketing, International Advertising Strategy, optional module

Optional modules include Data analytics and Social marketing.

Entry requirements

All entry requirements listed here should be used as a guide and represent the minimum required to be considered for entry. Applicants who are made a conditional offer of a place may be asked to achieve more than is stated.

Year 1

SQA Higher

ABBBB including English plus Nat 5 Maths at C ILC Higher: H1, H2, H3, H3, H3 including English at H2 PLUS Maths at O1

A Level

BCC PLUS GCSE Maths and English at C/4

ILC Higher

H1, H2, H2, H3, H3, including English at H2 or above PLUS Maths at O1

IB Diploma

25 points must include Maths

BTEC

Level 3 Extended Diploma in relevant subject at DMM PLUS GCSE Maths and English at C/4

Year 3

HND

HND Marketing, HND Advertising, and PR, HND Retail Management or HND Business with AA in the Graded Units.

Other HND qualifications may be considered

English Language

Academic IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent) with no element below 5.5.

Other academic and vocational qualifications

Each application to GCU is considered on an individual basis. If you do not have the typical academic entry qualifications, but can demonstrate relevant work experience and/or credits from recognized professional bodies, you may be eligible to enter this course via the University's Recognition of Prior Learning scheme.

International Pathways

If you do not meet the English language requirements, you may be eligible for the English for University Study programme.

Fees and Funding

The tuition fees you pay are mostly determined by your fee status. What is my student fee status?

Tuition fees 2018/19

  • RUK: £9250*
  • EU: £1820
  • International: £11,500

*Total tuition fees for RUK students completing a three or four-year degree are capped at £27,750. Specific fees are subject to confirmation by the Scottish Government and may change once confirmed.

International Student Start Dates

For new international students, orientation events start on 14 September 2018. This extra time is specifically designed to assist new international students in settling into the UK and GCU prior to the start of general student induction and teaching.

There will be a whole host of fun and informative activities taking place during this period, including campus and city tours, as well as welcome events where you can meet other international students.

Language Option

Students can choose to study language modules as part of this degree. GCU offers modules in French, Spanish, German and Italian and each is offered at different levels depending on your background knowledge.

International Study Exchange

To enhance your global outlook you can add international experience to your programme by choosing a study exchange with one of our partner institutions across Europe, North America, and new opportunities in Latin America and Asia.

Chartered Institute of Marketing

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) is the leading professional body for marketers worldwide and exists to develop the marketing profession, maintain professional standards and improve the skills of marketing practitioners.

GCU has joined forces with CIM to give students the opportunity to gain professional qualifications through CIM Graduate Gateway. CIM qualifications are highly sought after by employers, and map alongside our own degrees which ensures we are equipping students with the best opportunities for a successful marketing career.

Assessment Methods

The programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) which is the professional body for marketing within the United Kingdom. This means that the CIM values our programme and our graduates also gain partial exemption from the CIM diploma exams. The CIM's diploma leads to membership of the CIM and the further opportunity to gain the coveted title of Chartered Marketer.

Our approach to the learning, teaching, and assessment is tailored to the needs of the marketing sector. We adopt a wide range of learning and teaching methods to ensure that you gain the necessary knowledge and understanding of the global nature of marketing, while also developing your intellectual and personal skills.

Our programme is designed to enhance the employability and professional competence of our graduates with the skills and attributes demanded by employers in a global economy, and provide them with the knowledge, skills and attributes to be responsible leaders of the futures.

Our assignments encourage the development and application of skills such as evaluation, analysis, and judgment within a marketing context. For example, our Level Three students undertake the E-Marketing module, where after learning the theory and practice of internet marketing, they are required to act as 'internet marketing consultants'. They appraise the current internet marketing capabilities of a chosen organization and make recommendations as to how online marketing could be improved. programme and our graduates also gain partial exemption from the CIM diploma exams. The CIM's diploma leads to membership of the CIM and the further opportunity to gain the coveted title of Chartered Marketer.

We emphasize learning methods that encourage you to actively participate, to function in teams, to analyze real-life situations and problems, to apply ethical and sustainable business thinking and to use professional skills to communicate solutions.

Through GCULearn, the university's virtual learning environment, you'll have access to course materials, reading resources, assessments, and feedback online. Using GCU Learn, you'll undertake online activities and tasks, listen to podcasts, be involved in online discussion groups, and take part in blogs, wikis and Twitter-based learning activities.

Throughout the course, you'll get involved in live projects with industry partners setting design briefs and providing one-to-one student feedback.

International exchange is encouraged through formal and informal links with appropriate institutions, for example America - Iowa & Delaware, Canada Ryerson, Finland Lahti & Metropolia, and Paris. There are also opportunities to learn a foreign language as an option either at beginner, intermediate or advanced level.
