Program Description

How the course is taught

Weekly group tutorials, seminars, and regular individual tutorials will provide the platform for feedback: presenting work in progress, developing your confidence in discussing your work and contextualizing the role of design within society.

Course outline

The course has been carefully developed and evolved to optimize your growth and development over three years. This allows us to update course materials and react to industry and global communication issues so that you are engaging with highly current skills and debate.
Focused on a vibrant studio-based experience. and taught by dedicated and practicing staff, the course covers important design themes with an emphasis on live briefs and industry exposure.

What you'll do

Year One
You'll be supported by our course team to establish the core competencies of graphic design. learning how to approach design and tell a story visually. Workshops, assignments, peer critiques and reviews will help to shape your confidence and capabilities, while lectures and seminars from both resident staff and visiting speakers boost your understanding of the discipline.
  • Graphic language and communication - introduction to the visual language
  • Design process - understanding the route to final design outcomes
  • Difference & identity - working from the needs of others
  • Narrative - how to tell a story visually

Year Two

The central part of our course introduces you to the professional world in greater depth through skills and project-orientated tasks. to help prepare you for your final year before graduation. You"ll begin to grow more deeply as a designer. building individual reflection on professional ambitions.

The 2nd year also includes study trips. usually to London or Amsterdam. These feature designer-led workshops and studio visits to the likes of Pentagram, GBH, Fitch, Mother and Trapped in Suburbia.

  • Typography - developing typographic skills and appreciation
  • Design directions - approaching practice independently
  • Collaborative practice - live briefs from designers

Year Three

The final year focuses on intense project work, industry-facing events, a dissertation and professional practice workshops to ready you for life after graduation. The events provide a platform for you to showcase your material and include exhibiting at D&AD New Blood, as well as our own exclusive show at the Royal Society of Arts. Both these and our design networks help you to target studios or consider a postgraduate study to support your future ambition.

  • Large, open-plan, dedicated design studios

Our dedicated staff, award-winning designers, associate lecturers, and technicians are on hand to support your learning. Highly specialized practitioners in both traditional and digital fields, many of our team are invited to judge professional design awards and frequently contribute to books and publications.

We also offer an enviable network of contacts, which enables students to link with leading proponents of the subject. Most importantly these global connections are continuously being nurtured and developed, allowing the course to maintain its currency in content and opportunities to launch graduate careers.


  • You'll be given a series of varied design briefs throughout your course
  • There is an ongoing policy of review and feedback every week with staff and other students, while formal assessment is twice yearly
  • In year three you will also write a dissertation and exhibit your work for assessment as part of a final year show


  • Work as part of a design consultancy
  • Set up your own consultancy or work freelance
  • Careers in multidisciplinary design consultancies or as specialists within the areas of packaging design, branding, advertising, television graphics, interactivity, exhibition design, magazine and book design and animation
