Explore the cultural reaches and limitless opportunities of existing and emerging technology, by approaching computer-based digital content as an art form. You’ll address the impact of technology on society and culture, by studying its technical aspects and history and discovering its potential for innovation.  

This course will provide you with the technical and design skills you need to lead the development of interactive technologies. You’ll explore the language of code as a mode of expression, and then develop forms of art that establish interaction with others. 

You’ll develop a full awareness of the social, ethical and environmental impact of those technologies in the connected contemporary world. You’ll learn beyond understanding how to develop new digital interfaces, to also understand why they are necessary as a means of encouraging technological ideas that suggest alternative ways of inhabiting information communities. 

The course offers a number of specialist areas of study where you’ll be supported in developing your ability to use computers experientially, including how to use code to draw, connect virtual and physical worlds, or see the web as a living, evolving art medium. To give you hands-on skills, our Creative Technologies degree will make extensive use of our Multimedia Lab, VR Incubator and Digital Fabrication Lab for testing how computers and software can be used to test the limits and possibilities of art in the 21st century.

You will be taught by our team of highly experienced academic staff, all of whom are active makers and researchers in contemporary art and new media practice. You will benefit from their knowledge and experience of professional practice and they will encourage you to explore and test new technologies, concepts, media and audiences.

Core specialisms include consideration of areas such as; interaction design, interface design, social media design, interactive web media, mobile application design, web design, responsive and immersive environments, internet art, network-based art, and software art. 

You will become fully equipped to plan, code, design, and test new ideas in existing and emerging technologies as they are experienced in the public realm, in the studio and as a form of social enterprise.

Through studying Creative Technologies you’ll learn how digital code, platforms and media exist simultaneously in the studio, lab, and streets. Our cultural partnerships with galleries such as Tate and Karst mean that studying technology includes the exploration of the digital evolution of traditional materials and methods to understand how the nature of art has been transformed by computational thinking.

Our academically robust and intellectually stimulating degree programmes are delivered by our team of academics, technical demonstrators and invited experts who together deliver excellence in learning, teaching and assessment. Our programmes encourage diversity in thinking and making - from practical applications through to reflective, analytical writing.

We provide a dynamic, stimulating learning environment from which to test new models of practice while investing in the rich relationship between practice and theory - based on the potential in material and visual exploration, collaborative working, cross-fertilisation of ideas, and the exploration of histories and contemporary contexts.

Modules

Our unit structure applies to all of our undergraduate courses and creates a culture that promotes curiosity and creative thinking that extends beyond subject boundaries. Thematic approaches encourage an environment of free-flowing creative learning and opportunities for collaboration. Each unit will be contextualised by the subject specialism, and delivery will manifest uniquely through the specialist lens of each course. 

Applying to a four-year Extended BA degree?

If you choose to study an Extended BA, this will provide you with a preparatory year that will support your creative development through a broad range of art, design and media skills, as the basis for continued undergraduate study in your chosen specialist degree. In Year 0 you will learn through experimentation, exploration and discovery. Successful completion of this year allows automatic progression to Year 1 of your chosen three year BA at Plymouth College of Art.

Careers & alumni

Professional practice is embedded within all of our programmes.  Throughout your studies, you will have the opportunity to develop the key professional, transferable skills for employability in the creative industries and potentially work in partnership with other sectors locally, regionally, nationally or internationally. From writing and making the most of your CV to gaining industry experience, the acquisition of professional skills has been written into the programmes of study by our staff teams, who have ‘real world’ experience. They are also supported by our Industry Liaison Groups, who help inform the development of the higher education curriculum.

Graduates of this course can look to progress into a career in app development, web design, interface and user experience design, virtual reality, augmented reality, digital data forecasting, interactive art and immersive media.
