The need for communication and media managers is growing steadily: They should be able to act in an economically sound manner and be creatively engaged, because content must meet digital competence in order to competently direct digitization.

Media managers moderate the often very different requirements of editorial departments or creative departments on the one hand and corporate management on the other - within a media company. Finding common ways to implement new requirements is one of her tasks, such as innovation management and creative problem solving. Especially at a time when the media industry is undergoing fundamental changes in the sense of new channels, new revenue models and new processes. Therefore, they usually work in key positions in national and international media groups, in social media management as well as in multimedia / TV / radio / print production or business consulting. Communication managers, on the other hand, primarily manage communication - not only in terms of marketing, but also in the sense of internal communication or corporate communication. They are in demand as experts for all media channels - offline and online. They are involved in planning, control, production and implementation as well as evaluation of projects and projects. To do so, they learn the basics of marketing, PR and journalism within the study program Communication and Media Management.

Graduates of the degree program are actively involved in all phases of the process - from conception to final implementation - and get involved on many levels, as they feel at home in both creative and economic space. They are in demand in many areas: They combine communication management in their studies, ie the areas of corporate communication (both internal and external), marketing and PR, as well as media management. They also apply business model development, change management, content production and storytelling skills alongside the use of the latest digital technologies, such as virtual reality. Communication and media managers also prove to be extremely competent and versatile in a number of interdisciplinary disciplines. Thus, the differentiated training enables entrepreneurship to become entrepreneurial as well as to market and publicize themselves, as they also study the intricacies of public relations as part of their training. The term management does not refer in the first instance to a management position, but above all to the steering competence.

All sites have modern technology in the form of TV and radio studios as well as television cameras and EB equipment (electronic reporting).

Our degree programs at our university are NC-free. We believe that a one-time, subjective rating should not affect the overall life plan. For us, the passion for the future profession, motivation and enthusiasm counts. Therefore, we select our applicants in the course of studies Media Management / Communication Management on the basis of the results of an entrance test, regardless of their numerus Clausus. The fact that this concept proves itself is demonstrated by our low drop-out rate, which is far below the national average. As a state-accredited university, our students are eligible for the Bachelor as well as the Master BAföG.

Course contents

Communication and media managers need to cover a wide range of skills in their later career. In addition to the core disciplines of internal and external communication as well as marketing, the bachelor's program conveys a broad spectrum of economic knowledge in the areas of business administration and economics, media, micro and macroeconomics, accounting, the basics of statistics and business law. Students also learn methods of market research, the writing of press texts and the creation of media-usable content - from video and photo to text and audio - as well as the associated handling of content management systems.

To achieve this, students prepare for a senior position - including lectures in corporate governance, strategic planning, project management and crisis communication, as well as mediation techniques. In addition, students receive training on how to accompany the digital transformation.

semester abroad

One semester overseas is an integral part of our studies in the fourth semester. Thanks to our broad university network with currently more than 40 partner universities, we offer students in all five continents the opportunity to spend a semester abroad. Within Europe, participation in Erasmus is possible, with which students can secure a monthly grant during their studies abroad.

Excursions and offers

Unlike other public universities, we attach particular importance to imparting all our teaching content with practical relevance. Therefore both parts of communication management study and media management study include several practice projects. All our locations are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and offer students free access to the campus' own TV and recording studios during their studies.

Also, a variety of excursions, from visits to local businesses, newsrooms, TV channels and news agencies to joint excursions to destinations abroad, is part of the study.

Last but not least, in addition to regular, interdisciplinary workshops for our students, our campuses offer many different side events, from readings to informational events on exhibitions and vernissages.

Become a specialist in his field

In the specialization study program (the last two semesters), students independently select specializations that they take up to completion. These modules range from courses in entrepreneurship (starting up start-ups) through customer relationship management (CRM) to moderation in radio

According to the comprehensive study content, graduates have a wide range of career opportunities when they start their careers. Our degree programs are FIBAA-accredited and thus recognized by the state - graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts (BA) after completing their studies.

The degree program qualifies post graduates for a range of professional activities in the business, media and marketing sectors, corporate communications and public relations as well as publishing and non-profit organizations (NGOs).

Thus, a graduate can become a communication and media manager, press spokesman or PR manager, publishing director, TV production manager, communications consultant, mediator, social media manager or even business consultant.

Graduates are also suitable for market research, film production and public affairs and can also become lobbyists. Their managerial skills also give them an above-average qualification for management positions.

Why study communication management and media management?

After many years considered for many in the study and career decision: "The main thing to study with the media," the media landscape in Germany is now incredibly diverse and innovative - but unfortunately not always economically. Corresponding courses of study in the past focused mostly exclusively on the creative part of the media production and neglected the business aspect sometimes completely. However, it has since become apparent that due to a lack of economic insight and lack of commercial experience, many creatives are denied executive positions in the economy.

The study Media Management / Communication Management trains participants with the aim of uniting the creative potential of typical media professions with knowledge of economic conditions and processes, planning ability and corporate management. Thus, after completing their bachelor's degree, they become an all-rounder in their field and can flexibly adapt to various positions as well as take on the leading role. After all, anyone who wants to successfully enter the media industry must not only study communication or study media studies, but become a manager instead of mastering only partial aspects and understanding every medium in its entirety. The tasks range from competence in communication (including knowledge in communication design, media design and media technology), business administration and digital business to aspects of journalism and public relations.

You can apply one year in advance for the desired semester start with us. The application deadline for the winter semester is August 15 (non-EU applicants: June 15) and for the summer semester February 28 (non-EU applicants: February 28) . Following this, there is a follow-up procedure for unrecognized study places. If you already have a valid student visa for Germany, you can apply within the official application deadline.

By the way: You can also take the entrance exam without a high school diploma and one year before your planned start of studies. It gives you the certainty of whether or not you can study at the University of Applied Sciences Europe .

The following requirements apply to the beginning of a Bachelor's degree program:

  • Applications can be submitted by 15 August (non-EU applicants: 15 June) or by 28 February (non-EU applicants: 28 February)
  • General higher education entrance qualification and / or Fachhochschulreife incl. Practical part *
  • Successful admission procedure
  • Personal interview
  • Well-founded English and German skills at B2 level

There is no restriction by an NC (Numerus clausus).

* In exceptional cases, a study is also possible without the general (Fach-) Hochschulreife. For this purpose, a completed vocational training, at least two years of professional experience in a professional vocational training as well as the enrollment in a subject-related study are necessary.

Benefits in programs of study at other state or state recognized higher education institutions as well as extra-curricular achievements are recognized on application, provided that their equivalence with the achievements in the respective study course is established. Equivalence shall be established where no material difference can be demonstrated and the performance in terms of content, scope and requirements of the study program for which credit is requested is substantially the same. Responsible for this is the examination board. The concrete conditions for crediting and the exact procedure for this are regulated in the relevant examination regulations for the study program.

registration procedures

For a complete application, we require you to fill out the online application form, a CV, a letter of motivation (at least one DIN A4 page in German) as well as your Abitur or Fachabitur certificate. All documents can also be submitted online. If you do not yet have a current high school diploma, please submit the most recent certificate from the upper secondary school. The members of our selection committee agree on their suitability. Then you complete an online admission test. Should this be positive, we invite you to the selection interview. You will receive a confirmation shortly if you will get a study place.

Tips for motivational writing

The safe use of the German language is the basis for a successful study. Therefore, the letter of motivation also serves, among other things, to give us an idea of your language skills in advance. Describe us on one to one-and-a-half A4 pages (Arial font, font size 12, single-spaced), what interests you in your chosen study, why you would like to study at the University of Applied Sciences Europe , and what your expectations are. You should not withhold any characteristic peculiarities or inspiring experiences from already completed internships in your letter of motivation.

Admission test and selection interview

The entrance test includes:

English test

The English language test is done online and consists of a variety of tasks that are focused on grammar, spelling and vocabulary skills.

If grammatical or linguistic deficits are revealed, we may recommend that you attend our pre-courses in English prior to beginning your studies.

performance test

The performance test is comparable to an IQ test. In a total of 105 minutes, multiple-choice speech, mathematical and spatial intelligence are tested. In the linguistic field, it is important to find additions of sentences, analogies or similarities of concepts.

The mathematical abilities are queried by simple arithmetic tasks, which can be solved by "lubrication sheets". Counting fractions, completing number series, completing arithmetic symbols must be carried out under time pressure.

Detecting surface models of cubes, forming triangles or circles, discovering groups with identical patterns are the tasks with which the figural spatial intelligence is determined.

personality test

The personality test provides information about the individual achievement motivation. Examining behavior in different professional or private situations provides insight into personality traits that are grouped into a "measure of determination of job-related achievement motivation". Some applicants recognize personal strengths and weaknesses that often make them think.

admission interview

Following the tests, a concluding conversation with one of our professors or their representative will follow on the same day. In it, we first explain the evaluations of the tests and, if necessary, tell you which requirements you still have to fulfill before starting your studies.

Furthermore, we will discuss your individual expectations of the study and your goals afterwards. You will also learn how we work, what is important to us and what we expect from our future students. The demands placed on our future students are high - we attach particular importance to analytical thinking, social competence, oral expressiveness as well as goal orientation and resilience. We do not want to intimidate or overwhelm you - on the contrary! Show us who you are! Honesty and openness are more effective than general phrases or a played dynamics.

Math Foundation Course

Mathematics is not necessarily one of the most popular subjects and many things seem unimportant to other challenges in lower and middle grades. However, some core elements are important for a degree-based study. Elementary knowledge of the lower and intermediate level as well as economic applications of the upper level topics are discussed during our preliminary course.

We offer you mathematics pre-courses in Hamburg and Iserlohn.

Please bring along calculator, writing pad and pen. The number of participants is at least 10 and is limited to 30 places. The fee is 145 € per course.

Hamburg:

The course will take place from 4 March to 8 March 2019 from 9 am to 1:30 pm on the Hamburg campus.
