B.S. in Psychology

General

Program Description

Many of us want to know why people behave the way they do. And some of us want to really know why, and then do something to help. If you're one of those people, then a psychology major may be what you're looking for.

Psychology is the study of the mind and behavior. The discipline embraces all aspects of the human experience — from the functions of the brain to the actions of nations, from child development to care for the aged. In every conceivable setting from scientific research centers to mental health care services, “the understanding of behavior" is the focus of the psychology. Psychology majors at Pitt-Bradford take courses such as: Introduction to Psychology, Personality Theories, Child Development, Statistics, Social Psychology, Experimental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Counseling Psychology.

As a psychology major, you'll learn a lot about why humans behave the way they do. You'll get to focus on one area that you're interested in and design and conduct your own research. When you're ready, you can head out into the community for an internship at a mental health facility in a local hospital or at a social service agency or correctional institution. You can even take part in a counseling-related internship.

Once you earn your degree, you'll be prepared to work at a social service or mental health agency. Or, you can work in a school or for a company. You could even accept a job at a governmental agency. Or, you could decide to go to graduate school for more study.
