A Media Designer is a producer and digital artist working in the communications field across various platforms, mixing languages of communication in an increasingly integrated way in creative and editorial choices, technological solutions and production formulas. The activity of the interaction designer integrates the design and development of interactive contents with a transmedia story for entertainment, communication, gaming, advertising and information.
Professional Profile: The interaction designer can work freelance or in collaboration with agencies for communication and human-computer interaction development, web agencies, and cross media factories, production companies, new media broadcasters, integrated graphic design studios, publishers for digital products, e-games, apps and interactive interfaces, companies working in communication and distribution for entertainment, information and communication, artistic enhancement, net marketing, community management and cross-media editing for large editorial groups or independent productions.
The course is recognized by Italian Ministry of Education and Research (MIUR) as an Academic Diploma Level I (180CF)
The Interaction Designer is an experrt in dealing with and managing sounds and images, interfaces and interactive content.
The first year is an approach based on the fundamentals, in which one learns about the basic techniques and methodology necessary to operate on projects. During the year, one gains knowledge about the basic tools, both operational and conceptual: from the basic graphic design project for the development of all the interface-applications to the perception of forms and colors, from the software for drawing to how to work on images, from the basics involved in programming to the development of applications. One also learns about the cultural basics which allow one to interpret and decode the different languages of visual communication, contemporary art and cinema.
The second year is based upon design projects and the realization of a multimedia product, experimenting with all the potential applications: usability, interfaces, graphics programs, programming. The projects are concentrated on the following themes: new media interaction, web communication, interactive systems, and game design. During the year, further experience with application software is given, applying these to the development of an assisted project, with the goal of dealing with all the different aspects of the profession.
The making of applications for mobile devices (iPhone, iPad...), the design of interactive exhibitions and environments, and game design, are the three macro-areas which all the theoretical, technical and cultural teachings revolve around during this second year.
The third year is dedicated to the specialization and deepening of knowledge regarding all those aspects which are needed to finish in the best way possible a multimedia product. Students must be able to demonstrate knowing how to manage an autonomous project: the project is conceived according to a vision of cross-media, and the students must know how to manage the communication of the project, make coherent choices according to their promised goals and be able to sustain their project choices.
The thesis project represents a fundamental learning experience of the three year course, in which the student puts to use all of his / her cultural experience, design and technical abilities matured during the three years in conditions involving a complex design problem, under conditions which simulate a professional situation. The project themes may be of a practical nature or based on theoretical research.
