Program Description

January virtual open days

The Academy of Music and Performing Arts (AMPA) is an ambitious, innovative conservatory programme that emphasises high-quality performance, chamber music, and creativity. The Academy brings students to a high level of excellence while connecting music with other art forms such as dance, theatre and fine arts. Our core programme components are artistic excellence, an international environment, intensive work with ensembles in residence, and interdisciplinary opportunities. We educate students to become leaders in their field and play important roles in the development of new visions on the music profession.

Fontys AMPA is part of Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts (FHK), which has 15 arts programmes (bachelor and master) under one roof. AMPA offers a 4 years Bachelor of Music programme. It is an internationally oriented study to educate students to the highest level of their capabilities as artists. To this end we open the doors of our beautiful FHK building; we cooperate intensively with experts in music, ensembles and the other arts programmes within FHK. AMPA is supported by a platform of Dutch and international ensembles in residence

What to expect from us

We educate our students to become pioneers in their field. Six core skills make up the pioneering attitude of our students: ensemble playing, self-management, interdisciplinarity, applied research, collective entrepreneurship, and international connectedness. Our professors are internationally renowned artists, who have the abilities to bring you to a higher level of artistry. In addition, a number of high-profile ensembles in residence will conduct extensive work with our students.

What do we expect from you

Studying music means working hard at doing something you love: music. You are musical and have the academic skill set to pursue a Bachelor degree. We expect a high level of technical and musical ability on your instrument and, over the years, interest in working in projects with other musicians and artists. You are passionate, curious, and creative. You are ready to put your musical talent to work!

The Fontys way of studying

Fontys AMPA differs from other conservatories in that it offers almost twice as much training sessions in major subjects. The instrumental education consists of individual and group tuition. As a result, the number of contact hours with your teacher is almost doubled; at the same time, you learn how to reflect on your own evolvement and that of others. This is reflected in the results. You evolve at a faster pace, you encourage each other through constructive criticism, and you are setting an example to each other. Apart from that, there is an extensive chamber music programme, you participate in projects, master classes; you audition inside and outside Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts (FHK).

Admission Requirements

As a prospective Bachelor's student, you must have a diploma of higher secondary education that is equivalent to Dutch standards***. If you have different education and are over 21, you can take a test to prove the capability of studying at a higher professional education level. *** Admission requirements are described on (admission requirements).
