University of Buckingham

Introduction

Buckingham is unique. It is the only independent university in the UK with a Royal Charter, and probably the smallest with around 1000 students. Honours degrees are achieved in two intensive years of study. We keep class sizes small, with a student:academic staff ratio of 8.9:1 and the Oxbridge style tutorial groups are often personalised and always exhilarating.

The University campus is well known for being one of the most attractive locations in the region. The Great Ouse river, home to much wildlife, winds through the heart of our campus. Much of our teaching takes place in our restored buildings such as the Franciscan Building, formerly a friary, and, Chandos Road Building, a converted turn-of-the-century milk factory, while students can also enjoy the Hunter Street Library, once military barracks.

Each student mixes with 89 other different nationalities and so being at Buckingham is just like being in a mini global village. These contacts, acquaintances and friendships, carry on long after life at Buckingham is over. Our graduates find jobs all over the world, and the friendships they make here go a long way to broadening their experience and to giving them links that, possibly, no other university can do at such an intense level.

BSc in Economics with History

A proper understanding of economics requires historical perspective. The rationalist structure of modern economic theory is a powerful explanatory tool and is of universal significance – but the importance of the institutional context is often overlooked. If the reality of scarcity, the exercise of choice and the inescapable nature of opportunity cost are timeless and universal, the social mechanisms, laws, conventions and institutions within which individual and collective choices are made evolve continuously. In his book Structure and Change in Economic History (1981) the recent Nobel Prize winner in economics (Douglas North) wrote that ‘for long enough periods of time to be crucial to the historian, human culture produces diverse, conflicting, and inefficient solutions’ (p.7).The degree programme in Economics with History enables students to develop a fuller appreciation of the forces of economic change. It balances the ‘universalist’ assumptions of the economist with the ‘particularist’ approach of the historian and helps those who have had little previous acquaintance with economics to understand economic theories through the study of historical examples. Thus, students will be better able to use economic theory and to assess economic policy in ways that take into consideration the differing time paths of legal, political and cultural inheritance. It will be of particular interest to those wishing to pursue careers in public policy, international agencies, journalism or education.... [-]

BSc in Economics with Politics

The study of economics has been historically very closely linked to the study of politics. Adam Smith and other 18th Century founders of the classical school of economics were ‘political economists’ and were closely concerned with the connections between political and economic life.

More recently, the pervasive influence of governments on economic activity has led to the development of ‘Public Choice’ theory – the application of economic ideas and method to political behaviour. For students wanting to see how business activities are influenced by government (and vice-versa) and who wish to follow careers in politics, journalism or education, this combination of subjects is particularly appropriate. Economics with politics can also be used as a foundation for branching out later into business (via an MBA) or into academia (after studying for a more specialist MSc).... [-]

BA in English Literature with French

English Literature here is taught to small groups by energetic and enthusiastic staff, led by Oxford-trained academics with international research profiles in 19th and 20th-century studies. Ideas developed in core seminars are taken forward in weekly small-group tutorials, where half a dozen students are encouraged to discuss and interpret specific passages of writing, under the watchful guidance of their tutor. Our students are expected to read widely, and to develop strong lines of argument and personal responses to what they find, anchored in an informed understanding of the discipline and with reference to the critical debates that animate it.The degree is structured around a combination of period study, thematic study, and modules inculcating theoretical and practical skills. Victorian literature modules cover prose from Dickens to Gaskell, and poetry from Browning to Hardy; twentieth-century literature topics range from Rhys, Hurston, Woolf, and Plath to Hemingway, Forster, Larkin, and Beckett.... This is not a pick-and-mix degree; the minor subjects are designed to integrate with the History modules. The History Major is a new programme. It has been carefully designed and fine-tuned by Buckingham’s team of experienced and high-calibre historians. Students progress to study the history of history and to reflect on historical method. In the last part of the course we study historical documents and texts, and develop research and writing skills through a long essay and a dissertation. So the programme not only teaches history; it also teaches you to think historically and to research and write history.History is one of the five most popular subjects among UK university students, and with good reason. Having a historical perspective enables people to make sense of today’s rapidly changing world. BA in English Studies for Teaching

English Studies is the study of both English Language and English Literature. It is a rich and thoughtful field in which to do a degree. You study both high-level issues of Language – grammar, syntax, rhetoric and writing styles – and also theoretical and philosophical aspects of language – how language functions in relation to community and politics, issues of language and power, forms of English, and so forth.

At the same time as this, you take a range of modules in English Literature, developing your understanding of the subject. Your study of English language is both functional, and cultural. English Studies is usually read in relation to a further strand: communications and media; practical journalism skills; or pedagogical skills in relation to the teaching of English. The links on the right will give you more information about individual degree combinations. As with the rest of Humanities, English Studies maintains small-group teaching, disappearing at other universities, allowing a real immersion in the subject, and thoughtfulness and care in the teaching. The special reading room in the central library, the Comino Room, has large holdings in relation to the degrees.
