OUR HISTORY

SAE AUSTRALIA

SAE was established in Australia in 1976 as the world’s first audio engineering institute. The early success of SAE and the demand for our practical, theory-based and industry relevant training quickly led to the establishment of other campuses nationwide. By 1982, SAE had campuses in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The purpose-built Byron Bay campus, offering unsurpassed audio facilities, opened in 2003.

From the establishment of SAE’s first institutes and courses, government accredited VET and Higher Education qualifications were introduced. SAE has now evolved to become a global leader in creative media education.

In 2004, SAE acquired Qantm College, a leading digital media educator specialising in 3D animation, games design and programming, web development and graphic design.

Qantm, one of the first education providers to offer degree programs in games design, has an impressive pedigree. The college was established in 1996 with the collective support of:

SAE INTERNATIONAL

Following on from the success of SAE in Australia, the first foreign SAE campus was opened in London in 1985. As in Australia, in the international arena SAE proved to be highly successful in providing a quality, practical and theoretical curriculum to aspiring professionals in the music industry.

Not long after the London campus was opened, SAE established its first European institute in Munich. Munich was to be the first of many foreign language SAE Institutes worldwide.

SAE was well established in Europe, Asia and New Zealand by the mid-90s. The first of 7 campuses opened in the USA in 1998.

From our humble Sydney studio beginnings, SAE today spans the globe with 53 campuses in 27 countries. COURSE OVERVIEW Undertake the Bachelor of Animation at SAE and build your expertise in all facets of Animation. Students will develop fundamental skills and knowledge in this exciting industry in areas such as 3D modelling, character animation, rigging, textures, project management, teamwork, lighting, rendering and compositing. Developing a solid understanding of these areas provides students with a solid foundation and context for further study before exploring in detail the specialist areas. During your time at SAE you will learn on industry standard software such as Maya, Autodesk 3D MAX and the Adobe Creative Suite. You will undertake specialised units designed for students to participate in real-world projects under the guidance of expert SAE staff. With this unique teaching style, you will demonstrate your skills and technical knowledge in a collaborative and creative studio-based learning environment. Your Studies: Each degree program is broken up into discrete stages, each designed to promote different skills. In Stage II we show you how your work contributes to and interacts with broader culture and media practice. This knowledge will enable you to work with a variety of other disciplines and artists and expand your potential on the global stage. You will complete a number of real-world projects with students not only in your own discipline, but in all other SAE disciplines. In Stage II, you will be given the opportunity to work as project specialists within the following areas. The types of projects and project roles you choose to undertake will determine what area of specialisation you fall within. Stage II has three studio modules with projects based on the following areas; 3D modeling In 3D Modelling, students will examine modelling techniques, terminology and methods. Students will develop and implement 3D production pipelines to create such things as environments, vehicles, creatures and characters. Students will need to research industry best practices and keep up to date with current trends in CGI production. This specialisation will further explore texturing and shading, lighting and rendering. Character Animation In the Character Animation specialisation, students will focus on the principles of character animation such as posing, motion studies, body mechanics, facial animation and much more. Students will also learn to develop effective and user friendly animation rigs that serves as a means to control and animate a character, similar to the controls of a puppet. Visual Effects In the Visual Effects specialisation, students will explore the areas of modelling, texturing, lighting, rendering and compositing with an emphasis on incorporating assets into a range of digital media. Students can investigate topics such as matchmoving, particle systems, dynamic simulations and colour grading. By the end of the course, students will be able to composite a range of disparate elements into a cohesive final product. Stage III Stage III is the final part of your studies. Here you will undertake an interdisciplinary project of your choice to be the final and most ambitious portfolio project that you will undertake. You will also finalise your studies by undertaking an elective module and completing a compulsory internship. By the time you graduate, you will have; a professional online presence that you will have begun building at the start of the program, a wide range of interdisciplinary projects present in your portfolio, and a deeper understanding of the creative media fields and real-world experience. COURSE OVERVIEW The SAE Bachelor of Film is a hands-on filmmaking course covering tactile hard skill elements of filmmaking in the modern era. New forms of film distribution have changed the film-viewing environment but the foundation skills needed to create films are still core to the future of film production. Soft skills are invaluable attributes for students and are taught through the organising of film productions at the student level. Communication, scheduling, and organisational skills are the core of the Studio Units delivered in Stage II alongside the foundational skills learnt. Creation of high quality short films with high production values lead students through this combined technical and people oriented delivery giving them the springboard to all areas of filmmaking. The Production specialisation focuses on targeting producing and directing skills specifically to this stream, strengthening the ‘big picture’ skill-set of graduates. Post Production The Post Production specialisation adds more specific compositing and software curriculum elements to the common core subjects of this degree. Visual Effects are used in many more films than most people realise and these techniques are studied in this specialisation using industry standard software. Some of these high level softwares were traditionally very expensive and required major hardware installations in order to use. These are now much easier for students to access, increasing creative possibilities within the realm of all future filmmakers. Stage III Stage III is the final part of your studies. Here you will undertake an interdisciplinary project of your choice to be the final and most ambitious portfolio project that you will undertake. COURSE OVERVIEW Undertake the Bachelor of Games Development at SAE and build your expertise in programming or games design. Apply skills and knowledge in this exciting industry in areas such as level design, social and mobile game development, game engine programming, gameplay programming, game design, project management, serious games and much more. During your time at SAE you will work with industry standard software such as Unreal Engine 4, Unity3D, Autodesk 3D Studio Max and Maya. As a student in Games Development you will also work with technologies such as Oculus Rift, Android, iOS and use industry standard programming languages such as C++, Javascript and C#. You will undertake specialised units designed for students to participate in real-world projects under the guidance of expert SAE staff. With this unique teaching style, you will demonstrate your skills and technical knowledge in a collaborative and creative studio-based learning environment. Your Studies: Each degree program is broken up into discrete stages, each designed to promote different skills. Stage I – Foundational Skills Development In Stage I, you will undertake a number of foundational units which will give you the essential technical skills and knowledge not only relevant to your discipline area, but also give you the skills required to collaborate with other creative media students and professionals in later stages of the program. In Stage II we show you how your work contributes to and interacts with broader culture and media practice. This knowledge will enable you to work with a variety of other disciplines and artists and expand your potential on the global stage. You will complete a number of real-world projects with students not only in your own discipline, but in all other SAE disciplines. In Stage II, you will be given the opportunity to work as project specialists within the following areas. The types of projects and project roles you choose to undertake will determine what area of specialisation you fall within. Stage II has two studio modules with projects based on the following areas; Games Programming The SAE Games Programming degree is a highly focused program which delves deep into game-play and game engine programming. You will build your skills in existing software packages and frameworks such as Unreal Engine and Unity, using these to build your technical skillset and develop your own game tools, libraries and engines. You will enhance your knowledge of C++ and object-oriented programming to build complex games and tools. Throughout the program, you will be working with students from all other disciplines to build a rich and high quality portfolio of work. Games Design In the Game Design specialisation you will work on a range of projects with your peers and SAE Facilitators which will build your skills and knowledge within the diverse scope of Game Design. During the program you will be able to pursue all facets of Game Design such as level design, systems design, economy design, combat and AI design, balancing, player psychology and much more. Best of all, we will give you the tools you need to be able to articulate design ideas into real working games. You will also explore complex artistic ideas that lead to original, personal games that are artistically meaningful to you. Work alongside other like-minded students and staff from all SAE disciplines to build a massive portfolio of projects. Stage III Stage III is the final part of your studies. Here you will undertake an interdisciplinary project of your choice to be the final and most ambitious portfolio project that you will undertake. You will also finalise your studies by undertaking an elective module and completing a compulsory internship. By the time you graduate, you will have; a professional online presence that you will have begun building at the start of the program, a wide range of interdisciplinary projects present in your portfolio, and a deeper understanding of the creative media fields and real-world experience. Upon graduating from the programming or game design specialisation, you will have significant experience working in simulated production environments. You will have learnt industry standard workflow and product lifecycle. You will have a portfolio of game projects used to to either begin your own startup or build your professional practice further. Students in the programming specialisation will have a range of portfolio projects which demonstrate an applied knowledge of C++ in the context of game-play programming and game engine programming.
