Accomplished accountants have the ability to collect complex financial data, analyze that information, and communicate it to others. Transylvania's broad-based accounting curriculum will prepare you for these challenging duties. Accounting students at Transylvania have access to a broad range of research and internship options, as well as excellent career opportunities. Students participate in field trips to local businesses to meet with managers and discuss their operations and accounting procedures. They also have the opportunity to assist professors with research, participate in community service, and obtain internships with area businesses and accounting firms. The Transylvania Edge Because of Transylvania's innovative curriculum, as well as the rigor of the program, our accounting graduates can sit for the CPA exam without having to earn a graduate degree. Although the current regulations of the accounting profession require 150 college semester hours to sit for the CPA exam, Transylvania's unique program entitles our graduates to sit for the exam upon completion of their undergraduate degree. Our graduates also have a strong advantage when applying to graduate schools, thanks to our faculty members' strong ties with top graduate programs across the country, our program's reputation, and our graduates' success in graduate school and on the CPA exam. The biology program prepares students for traditional fields of study as well as emerging fields, such as biophysics, bioinformatics, and molecular genetics. Transylvania students have a variety of opportunities to conduct research, both independently and with professors. Research projects may receive funding from the university or from outside organizations, such as the National Institutes of Health. Current faculty research interests include evolution and behavioral ecology of cannibalism, physiological and other correlates of avian personality, and ecology of non-native plant invasions. See the results for yourself—the majority of our students go on to medical, dental, or pharmacy school or are doing research in graduate programs at leading research institutions across the country. Compare the difference In our small lab sessions, you’ll be encouraged to sharpen your investigative skills by undertaking independent research. You’ll gain firsthand knowledge of subjects through field trips to destinations such as Kentucky’s Red River Gorge and Daniel Boone National Forest. May term travel courses have enabled students to study invertebrates in Florida, tropical ecology in Belize and Hawaii, native plants and animals in the forests of eastern Kentucky, and public health issues in the Philippines. The science of biology plays a central role in important issues like global climate change, stem cell research, and ecological restoration, as well as global health issues such as avian influenza, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Transylvania’s biology graduates actively engage these issues, both as researchers in the laboratory and as medical personnel on the front lines. Do you cringe at the thought of spending the next 40 years as a programmer? Not to worry! Computer science is about more than programming. It’s also about learning to get the computer to be the best tool for whatever task you need done. And with computers becoming ever more important tools in business and industry, this is a perfect time to take a closer look at computer science. What can I do with a computer science major? Transylvania's computer science major includes a concentration from any liberal arts discipline on campus. All computer science students who want work experience in the field have such opportunities. The exercise science major provides the foundation for a broad range of post-graduate opportunities. The curriculum covers the science behind human movement to help students understand the complex relationships among physical activity, health, and wellness. Students can then apply the concepts learned in class to practical experiences through internships at physical and occupational therapy practices, corporate wellness centers, and sports medicine clinics. The Transylvania Edge Exercise science majors at Transylvania benefit from the Clive M. Beck Athletic and Recreation Center, a 97,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that accommodates varsity sports, intramurals, fitness activities, and casual recreation. While the center was designed for all Transylvania students, it superbly fills the curricular needs of the exercise science program, offering three classrooms, an exercise physiology lab, a dance studio with sprung floor, and a training room with hydrotherapy facilities. International affairs is an interdisciplinary major that includes courses from political science, economics, history, anthropology, and foreign languages, among others. An important aspect of the major is learning to think about modern challenges from a variety of perspectives. By including courses from multiple disciplines, the major breaks down traditional ways of thinking and encourages the development of critical analysis skills. In a world where isolation is nearly impossible, understanding the individual's role in the global community is an important emphasis of the major. The Transylvania Edge Transylvania's international affairs program offers tremendous flexibility. In consultation with the program director, students can choose electives that best suit their interests and essentially design the major to fit their needs. Students majoring in international affairs are strongly encouraged to study abroad either in May term or during the regular fall or winter terms. Depending on your choice, the courses available can prepare you for a range of opportunities from starting your own business to joining a Fortune 500 company. The business classes, along with the general liberal arts courses required of all Transylvania students, provide a well-rounded education that can best suit your interests. A distinguishing characteristic of the program is the opportunity to specialize in one of four subject areas: management, marketing, finance, or hospitality. All concentrations give you the analytic and strategic skills necessary for your career choice. These concentrations expand Transylvania University's writing curriculum, developing your analytical and creative abilities, by having you complete upper level projects with local companies.
