Who We Are

We are a private, coed, four-year liberal arts college. We're a community of more than 2,100 students who come from 36 states and 29 countries and represent 38 religions and denominations. We employ 175 full-time faculty including NASA and NSF scientists, award-winning composers and writers, and national experts in a wide range of fields.

Our hometown – Fargo-Moorhead – is a growing community with nearly 30,000 college students, a hopping arts and entertainment scene, and a dizzying array of internship and employment opportunities.

How We Learn

Concordia offers more than 50 majors, including 15 honors majors, as well as 12 preprofessional programs in medicine, law, engineering, dentistry and more. Hundreds of internships and cooperative education opportunities in town and around the world provide plenty of firsthand professional experience.

Our globalized curriculum combines significant study away opportunities and instruction in seven world languages. We are a nationally recognized leader among undergraduate institutions for the number of students who gain global experience abroad.

What We Do

More than 100 student organizations – newspapers and literary magazines, volunteer groups, religious organizations and more – make it easy to get involved and stay active. More than a third of our student body participates in one (or more) of our 19 music ensembles, and nearly a quarter of our students participate in competitive athletics.

What We Achieve

Concordia students have achieved an 88 percent acceptance rate into medical school (in 10 years surveyed). Ninety-eight percent of surveyed Concordia graduates have jobs or have been admitted to graduate school within six months of graduation. Five of our students have won prestigious Fulbright scholarships in the past three years. In recent years, Concordia has garnered nine of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

The Accounting major provides a choice of three concentrations. General Accountancy: This is ideal for students who are interested in corporate or general accounting and want to complete their major easily within four years. Students interested in pursuing a graduate degree may also be interested in the general accounting concentration. Accounting and Finance: This concentration provides a great combination of business finance and accounting that will give students a wider understanding of a company's operations from a financial point of view. Public Accountancy: The Public Accountancy concentration will guide students through a robust 150 credit program that prepares them to take the Certified Public Accountant exam. Concordia students have the second highest pass rate for the CPA exam among all Minnesota colleges and universities (64.4 percent with an average score of 76). CPA Club Concordia's accounting students have also created a student organization called the CPA Club for accounting majors to get together and host events on campus such as outside presenters, workshops, and career opportunities. Biology is among Concordia's signature programs, owning a stellar reputation for placing students in prestigious graduate programs and careers. In addition to classroom interactions, biology students collaborate with faculty on research at an exceptionally high level – designing experiments and serving as co-authors on projects ranging from examining the effect of diabetes on blood vessels to studying elephants in Tanzania. The chance to present at national conferences is among the exciting outcomes of their creative research work. With a heavy emphasis on hands-on learning, biology students gain real-world experience that gives them distinct advantages when they graduate. Whether you plan a career in research, the health professions or environmental studies, the biology program at Concordia will prepare you to go farther faster. Do Meaningful Research Our faculty members share their knowledge as you work side-by-side on research projects. There are many opportunities – from the annual summer research program, the Mayo Clinic Innovation Scholars Program, to assisting with the Kilimanjaro Elephant Research and Conservation Project in Tanzania. Study Abroad Join in the study of parasitic diseases in Bangladesh, or travel on May Seminars Abroad to Tanzania or see the amazing animals species on the Galapagos Islands. Get Good Advice Biology is the gateway program for students who wish to enter the health professions. About 40 percent of Concordia biology graduates go on to medical, dental, veterinary or graduate schools. If you are headed for a career in the health professions, our Health Professions Advisory Council will give you expert advice on the courses you should take that will help you the most for your chosen career. It’s nice to know you have a great team of people helping you achieve your goals. After Concordia Our biology graduates leave the program prepared for whatever career they choose. Concordia’s biology students are always up to something exciting. Just stop by the department’s conference room and see for yourself. The room’s giant chalkboard lists all of the students accepted to summer research programs, as well as those headed off to graduate and health professions schools. Recent Concordia alumni are attending grad school for cancer research, infectious diseases, neuroscience and plant ecology. Chemistry With a chemistry major or minor, the possibilities are limitless. From continuing the study of chemistry at the graduate level, obtaining a job in the chemical or pharmaceutical industries, or to providing a firm foundation for a career in the health professions, the chemistry department at Concordia College is your gateway to the future. The Concordia College chemistry department prides itself on providing a first-class education for all students in both the classroom and laboratory. Chemistry also works hard in offering a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom from research with faculty to internships and beyond. The department possesses a state-of-the-art instrumental laboratory and a cutting-edge laser facility for spectroscopy research, both of which are utilized extensively in both teaching and a range of faculty research. The department offers both a standard chemistry major and an American Chemical Society-certified major with optional specializations in neurochemistry and biochemistry. Several chemistry faculty members are also actively involved in the neuroscience program, a novel interdisciplinary area which draws extensively from chemistry, biology and psychology. Faculty Research Whether it is during the academic year or the summer, many of the chemistry faculty are actively involved in cutting-edge research. Areas under study range from noisy light spectroscopy, corrosion inhibition, degradation of environmental pharmaceutical contaminants and developing green synthetic routes to new pharmaceutical molecules. Teaching While You Learn From making oobleck (cornstarch and water) to watching their hair stand on end by touching a Van de Graaff generator, kids love to know how things work. Through the chemistry department’s Science Academy, Concordia students go into the community and show elementary school students some fun hands-on answers. Research Faculty and students working together on research is one of Concordia’s hallmarks, and the chemistry department backs up these opportunities 100 percent. Research Experiences for Undergraduates – students are accepted to major universities across the country. Summer Research Program – patterned after the esteemed REU program, students do hands-on research with faculty, can participate in presentations and discussions and even have a bit of fun at social events with other students. Authoring Pages – Students regularly appear as co-authors with faculty on papers in prestigious peer-reviewed scientific journals. After Concordia Concordia chemistry students are going to outstanding graduate schools across the country – Cornell, MIT, Creighton and USC to name a few. They’re studying dentistry, pharmacy, medicine, and physical, analytical, organic and inorganic chemistry. Recent grads are working at a forensic crime lab in Chicago, the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, Colo., and the Hennepin County Medical Center as an AIDS pharmacist. [-]

Finance Are you considering a career in finance? Depending on your career aspirations, the Offutt School of Business at Concordia College has created a one-of-a-kind undergraduate experience. We combine cutting-edge curriculum with practical real-world experience. You can become involved with one of our student-managed funds to gain a real appreciation for what a career could become. We have two degrees that provide maximum flexibility to you – the student. For those who know they would like to go into finance, you can major in finance. Options include a *CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) track, which is intended to prepare young men and women for the CFA Level One exam. This curriculum covers approximately 80% of the Candidate Bank of Knowledge, as prescribed by CFA institute guidelines. In their junior year, students seeking this degree can apply for the Certificate in Finance. Acceptance into this program gives students credibility as well as an internship and an individually selected mentor. The major has six required finance courses, as well as two electives. For those students who are interested in finance, but as an add-on to an additional degree, the Offutt School offers a business major with a concentration in finance. This degree has two required courses and three electives. Although the requirements are less than the finance major, the concentration is comparable to many finance majors at other four-year institutions. Want to include an international focus? During the 2015-16 academic year, we will offer a one-week Exploration Seminar, "Business and Commerce in Switzerland." Spend a week in Zurich, Switzerland, meeting business executives, newer employees and interview for summer internships. In May 2016, we will offer an opportunity to spend two weeks in London visiting businesses and governmental regulators. You will be able to compare the U.S. Federal Reserve with the Bank of England. Internships are also being developed in businesses as well as governmental regulators. [-]

The major includes a comprehensive set of business courses, a minor in one language (or the equivalent number of credits in more than one language) and an international internship. Several current internship programs have specific language requirements, so it is wise to check with your advisor when planning your course load. In addition to language proficiency, cultural understanding is an important dimension of the major. Students will gain both understanding and proficiency in one of five language areas: Chinese, French, German Norwegian or Spanish. When the campus is abuzz with student activity, there seems to be music coming from all corners of the campus. Choosing music as a major or minor is a great stepping stone toward grad school in music performance or a way to display your creative expression while pursuing a second degree in business or biology. Additionally, one of every seven new music educators in Minnesota comes out of Concordia. Earn a Bachelor of Music Concordia offers two bachelor’s degrees to music majors: a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Music. Concordia's music program is accredited by NASM - The National Association of Schools of Music. World-Class Faculty From rewarding private lessons to inspiring full ensemble rehearsals, Concordia faculty and conductors will challenge you to perform at the top of your game. Perform Abroad Concordia’s top three ensembles tour around the world every four years. Perform with your second family while seeing the sites in far-off lands. After Concordia You can find Concordia music alumni all around the world – in addition to teaching, they are also singing, playing and conducting in some of the most prestigious concert halls and opera houses. Neuroscience The brain and nervous system are considered the "final frontiers" of science. Study neuroscience to be part of the action. Neuroscience is the study of how the brain and nervous system acquire, process and integrate information and how this information brings about behavior of an organism. It is an interdisciplinary major that draws on insight from the fields of biology, psychology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and more. Our major includes an emphasis on the physical sciences – particularly chemistry. As neuroscience researchers find it necessary to understand the brain and nervous system from a molecular point of view, you’ll have an edge. As a neuroscience major, you will: Enjoy a competitive edge when applying for health professions programs, neuroscience research or industry employment. Take courses designed specifically for neuroscience and taught by faculty from four disciplines. Engage in hands-on laboratory and service-learning opportunities. Be encouraged to develop your own research study. Complete a learning experience outside the classroom, such as an internship, independent study or a research project. Interdisciplinary Advantage The current trend in science is to understand nature from multiple perspectives. A neuroscience major pairs well with majors in psychology, biology or chemistry. The physics department is dedicated to the highest standards of teaching and research. Our program reflects a commitment to rigorous scientific and technical instruction grounded in the wider context of the liberal arts tradition. As a physics student, you’ll have research opportunities throughout your undergraduate experience at Concordia. In fact, the physics curriculum ensures that you will do research alongside faculty. Some research opportunities include planetary science, geomagnetism, experimental nuclear physics, atomic and molecular physics, mathematical physics and laser spectroscopy. Making Better Connections Concordia utilizes a new learning concept called studio physics, where students experience a seamless integration between lecture and lab. Faculty members briefly lecture at the start of the class period, and then students work in groups of three or four, either to solve problems or do experiments that are integrated with the lecture. Cocurricular Blend One physics major dreams of using his love of music and science to become an acoustical engineer and design concert halls. Cocurricular opportunities at Concordia mean students can combine excellent academic preparation with a love of playing in band or orchestra, or singing in a choir. Rocket Science Do research alongside a NASA scientist who is part of the Mars exploration team. Use the innovative technology of the department’s Van de Graaf microparticle accelerator used to simulate the physical processes caused by impacts of interplanetary dust particles on spacecraft. It is one of only four such accelerators in the world. Programs of Study The physics department has a program to fit your skills and ambitions in experimental nuclear physics, planetary physics, asteroid dynamics, mathematical physics, laser spectroscopy, theoretical nuclear astrophysics and high altitude balloon studies. In addition, you’ll have numerous opportunities to conduct research and study – inside the lab and out. Research Engage with faculty on research projects, as well as several research experiences built into the curriculum. Faculty-student research outside the classroom is a key factor in admission to graduate school. At Concordia, we’ll prepare you well. You may even have the chance to present your research. Gain Work Experience Intern at one of numerous healthcare facilities and agencies in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Use your knowledge at a juvenile detention center, the Fargo Youth Commission or Prairie St. John’s. Get Involved Become a member of Psi Chi, the national psychology honor society, or our campus Psychology Club. We also offer our own honors program, which gives you the chance to plan and complete your own research project. After Concordia With a degree in psychology, you’ll be prepared for a career in a variety of fields or graduate school. A psychology major provides excellent background for careers in business, law, medicine, seminary and education. Like a recent graduate who works for Lutheran World Relief as the fair trade projects coordinator, you can find a way to pair your psychology major with your interests and talents.
