BSc in Biodiversity and Conservation

The seas and oceans represent the largest part of the biosphere, yet there is still much to discover about the biology of marine organisms and of marine environments.

The biology of marine animals, plants and ecosystems are all very different from those of their more familiar terrestrial counterparts. Rather than being 'low' at the poles and 'high' in the tropics, marine diversity is focused around localised 'hot-spots' of temperate (including UK) rocky shores, tropical coral reefs, nutrient-rich cold currents, ancient cold ocean basins and deep sea volcanic vents.

There are major concerns about marine, and indeed global, environmental issues relating to human impacts on the biosphere, the loss and degradation of wilderness and increased vulnerability of species. This course of study is designed to introduce you to various aspects of marine ecology and marine biodiversity central to marine biology. The 'Ecology' elements provide the theoretical background to the understanding of species, communities, habitats and ecosystems while the 'Conservation' applies that knowledge to maintain habitats, populations and biodiversity.... BSc in Computer Games and Visual Effects

Designed in consultation with key figures from the gaming industry (Codemasters, EA and the Moving Picture Company), this Computer Games and Visual Effects degree is the first of its kind. Created in response to a growing demand for artists and technicians fluent in the arts of digital visualisation and animation, its aim is to address this current shortage. This course has established industry connections and we are the annual host of Brains Eden which enables students to meet with, learn from and network with key players in the Gaming industry. A careers workshop also offers our students the opportunity to talk with industry professionals and get advice on building a CV and graduate career paths. There is a thriving Gaming industry throughout the East of England and Cambridge offers great local connections. JAGEX run the second biggest MMORPG from Cambridge and Sony also has a development studio here. In addition to the Brains Eden event, the East of England is also home to Next-Next Gen competitions an inter-university computer game competition adjudicated by an industry panel which has been won by students on this course: Cristian Leon (2008) and Muhammad Zubair Enayet (2007)In 2010 a large Games jam was held in place of the Next-Next Gen competition with students from across the country taking part. The Anglia Ruskin students involved produced an excellent piece called 'Destroy the Brain' which was picked up by important indie games websites such as Rock Paper Shotgun and IndieGames.com.We have embraced the buoyant Indie Game scene which is rapidly developing in Cambridge. This is manifested in the running of multiple games jams (non-stop rapid game development sessions ranging from the gruelling 24 hour duration to the more civilised 12 hour). We have been very fortunate to have industry veterans of the calibre of Jon Skuse and Berbank Green of Jumped Up Games. They are currently knocking any rough edges off our final year students in their show reel preparation module. It is a common complaint within the Gaming industry that graduates, whilst technically proficient, often lack drawing and creative skills which are needed to underpin technical skills. This Computer Games and Visual Effects Degree is distinct in encouraging and supporting both your technical and creative development as well as providing you with the necessary theoretical background and project management skills to allow you to evolve and grow in order to meet the changing demands of this fast-paced industry.... BA in Illustration and Animation

Illustration and animation looks to the interaction between the two disciplines. At the heart of this is visual communication, and this is underpinned by the development of a personal visual language. Experimentation is seen as paramount in achieving this.

A keen interest in the visual world should inform this experimentation and there is a strong emphasis on drawing as a means of exploring the visual environment. The development of sequential narratives through animation enables you to use structure and composition as a key ingredient, and this feeds back into illustration work, while elements of autographic mark-making and the use of text and image, developed through illustration practice, feed into the visual language of animation. In the first year, you will spend around one third of your studio time on animation projects and two thirds on illustration. In your second year, this ratio is reversed, while in your third year, you are expected to negotiate your practice. The illustration modules in your first and second years are run jointly with students from BA (Hons) Illustration course, where you are all taught together in our illustration studios.... [-]
